ONC 21st Cures Act and the CMS Patient Protection and Affordable Cares Act
AST
Two Acts were published in May 2020, the HHS Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) 21st Cures Act, and the CMS Patient Protection and Affordable Cares Act, which will soon mandate sharing of all chart notes with patients. Many institutions have been talking about how to best address these changes, which are set to go into effect on November 2, 2020. Transplant is unique in that our records may often reference two patients- the recipient and the organ donor. In pre-transplant, sensitive information may be communicated related to eligibility. The AST will be exploring opportunities to create education around best practices in this area.

Introducing the Living Donor Circle of Excellence
AST
The AST is proud to introduce the Living Donor Circle of Excellence program! The vision for this program was inspired by the need to increase living organ donation by removing financial barriers donors sometimes encounter. Today, many employers do not offer any kind of compensation to an employee recovering from donating an organ. The Circle aims to change that. By recognizing companies who support living donation through providing salary support post-surgery, the AST envisions more people will consider this altruistic act.

Over the long-term, graft survival may be impacted by factors such as declining adherence, which may be affected by complex dosing regimens and neurotoxicities. Studies show a direct correlation between rejection losses and nonadherence, which is also proven to increase over time. Review 2-year published data and see the results achieved at 2 years in de novo kidney transplant patients.

Global Transplantation COVID Report March 2020
Transplantation
As during times of war, the challenges of the coronavirus crisis change our views in almost any aspect.
Transplant patients and those with end-stage organ failure are in a particular vulnerable position. Elective surgeries including live donor transplant procedures have paused in many countries. Deceased donor transplants, where the procedure is established, continue in some countries, albeit with modified donor and recipient criteria, in an attempt to reduce the risk of COVID transmission or an infection after transplantation. Those who are immunocompromised are probably at increased risk of severe disease, though the role of immunosuppression is debated and uncertain.
