Introducing the Living Donor Circle of Excellence
AST
The AST is proud to introduce the Living Donor Circle of Excellence program! The vision for this program was inspired by the need to increase living organ donation by removing financial barriers donors sometimes encounter. Today, many employers do not offer any kind of compensation to an employee recovering from donating an organ. The Circle aims to change that. By recognizing companies who support living donation through providing salary support post-surgery, the AST envisions more people will consider this altruistic act.

The Impact of Multi-Organ Transplant Allocation Priority on Wait-Listed Kidney Transplant Candidates
American Journal of Transplantation
Kidney‐Alone Transplant (KAT) candidates may be disadvantaged by the allocation priority given to multi‐organ transplant (MOT) candidates. This study identified potential KAT candidates not receiving a given kidney offer due to its allocation for MOT. Using the OPTN database, we identified deceased donors from 2002‐2017 that had one kidney allocated for MOT and the other kidney allocated for KAT or simultaneous pancreas‐kidney transplant (SPK) (n=7,378).

Liver Transplantation in the United States During the COVID-19 Pandemic: National and Center-Level Responses
American Journal of Transplantation
COVID‐19 has profoundly affected the American health care system; its effect on the liver transplant (LT) waitlist based on COVID‐19 incidence has not been characterized. Using SRTR data, we compared observed LT waitlist registrations, waitlist mortality, deceased donor LTs (DDLT), and living donor LTs (LDLT) 3/15/2020‐8/31/2020 to expected values based on historical trends 1/2016‐1/2020, stratified by statewide COVID‐19 incidence.

Optimization of De Novo Belatacept-Based Immunosuppression Administered to Renal Transplant Recipients
American Journal of Transplantation
Kidney transplant recipients administered belatacept‐based maintenance immunosuppression present with a more favorable metabolic profile, reduced incidence of de novo donor‐specific antibodies (DSAs), and improved renal function and long‐term patient/graft survival relative to individuals receiving calcineurin inhibitor (CNI)‐based immunosuppression. However, the rates and severity of acute rejection (AR) are greater with the approved belatacept‐based regimen than with CNI‐based immunosuppression.

HLA and AB0 Polymorphisms May Influence SARS-CoV-2 Infection and COVID-19 Severity
Transplantation
SARS-CoV-2 infection is heterogeneous in clinical presentation and disease evolution. To investigate whether immune response to the virus can be influenced by genetic factors, we compared HLA and AB0 frequencies in organ transplant recipients and waitlisted patients according to presence or absence of SARS-CoV-2 infection.
