Several factors are associated with increased hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) recurrence after liver transplantation (LT), but no reliable risk score has been established to determine the individual risk for HCC recurrence. This study aimed to develop and validate a Risk Estimation of Tumor Recurrence After Transplant (RETREAT) score for patients with HCC meeting Milan criteria by imaging.

The Milan criteria are used to allocate livers to patients with HCC requiring liver transplantation (LT) but do not include objective measures of tumor biology. Biological markers including the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) have been associated with recurrence risk. This study sought to develop a “Model Of Recurrence After Liver transplant” (MORAL) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

Fifty years have passed since the first human heart transplant in December 1967. Despite many advances in the science of transplantation, however, the community still lacks a solid method to assess rejection. This knowledge gap has led researchers to search for what Jon A. Kobashigawa, M.D., professor of medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, describes as “a new gold standard for the detection of rejection.” The task has become more complex because, in addition to T cell–mediated rejection, a more easily missed antibody-mediated rejection exists.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is associated with reduced patient survival following combined liver-kidney transplantation (LKT). The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of second-generation direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) in this difficult-to-treat population. The ANRS CO23 “Compassionate use of Protease Inhibitors in Viral C Liver Transplantation” (CUPILT) study is a prospective cohort including transplant recipients with recurrent HCV infection treated with DAAs.
