There are several opportunities to advance legislation with a direct impact on transplantation. You can make your voice heard by reaching out to your local representatives to encourage their support and sponsorship of the Comprehensive Immunosuppressive Drug Coverage for Kidney patients Act of 2016 and the Living Donor Protection Act. Visit the AST website to learn more about these legislative items and help raise awareness through an urgent request for grassroots support.
Contact your three Members of Congress and urge them to cosponsor & pass these important transplant community legislative initiatives. The preferred grassroots method to advance legislation is to personally make contact with your two U.S. Senators and U.S. House Representative. Information on identifying and accessing contact information for your representatives is available on the AST website for your convenience.

Tuesday's U.S. elections were closely watched here and around the world. November 8, 2016 will go down in the record books as one of the biggest upsets in modern political history. Defying all national projections and political polling, Donald Trump was elected the 45th President of the United States. On Capitol Hill, Republicans maintained their majorities in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. To learn more about how the election results may impact legislation that the AST is supporting and the anticipated impacts on healthcare in general, please take a few moments to read the new AST Washington Round-up - November 2016 Election Results Update.

Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy
A provocative question has emerged since the Supreme Court of Canada’s decision on assisted dying: Should Canadians who request, and are granted, an assisted death be considered a legitimate source of transplantable organs? A related question is addressed in this paper: is controlled organ donation after assisted death (cDAD) more or less ethically-problematic than standard, controlled organ donation after circulatory determination of death (cDCDD)?

In this paper, we have reviewed the literature and report on kidney donors that are currently used at relatively low rates. Kidneys from donors with acute kidney injury (AKI) seem to have outcomes equivalent to those from donors without AKI, provided one can rule out significant cortical necrosis. Kidneys from donors with preexisting diabetes or hypertension may have marginally lower aggregate survival but still provide patients with a significant benefit over remaining on the wait list.

A total of 190 patients were randomly assigned 1:1 on day 28 posttransplantation to mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) or Everolimus combined with cyclosporine A (CsA) and steroids.
