This just in and you’re the first to read it!
The Cutting Edge of Transplantation (CEOT) committee has decided to reopen its abstract submission for this February’s meeting in Phoenix, Arizona. The new deadline for abstract submission is Dec. 30.
AST encourages everyone who submitted to ATC to also submit to CEOT. While ATC has a policy that abstracts submitted to other meetings will not be considered for ATC that is not applicable to other AST or ASTS meetings - meaning that AST will gladly accept both.
For information and directions on how to submit an abstract, as well as grant application details, click here.
Ready to register? Head to the registration page to reserve your spot at the February CEOT meeting.

Clinical Simulation in Nursing
Patient self-management after organ transplant surgery is complex and requires a high degree of knowledge to prevent complications. The teach-back technique can be used to confirm patient knowledge and clarify misunderstandings when preparing patients for discharge, but it requires practice in order for it to be effective. Standardized patient simulation can be an effective way to train registered nurses to provide patient education such as teach-back.

Transplant professionals recognize that the long-term follow-up of living organ donors is a priority, yet there has been no implemented solution to this problem. This critical gap is essential, because the transplant field is now emphasizing living donation as a means to address the organ shortage. We detail our living donor initiative, which sets several priorities we recognize as fundamental to persons who have donated organs at our transplant center.

Homozygosity for apolipoprotein-L1 (APOL1) risk variants has emerged as an important predictor of renal disease in individuals of African descent over the past several years. Additionally, these risk variants may be important predictors of renal allograft failure when present in a living or deceased donor. Currently, there is no universal recommendation for screening of potential donors.

Adult lung transplant recipients with small chests have traditionally received lungs from pediatric donors, placing an additional strain on the already restricted pediatric donor pool. Performing lobar lung transplantation (LLT) can circumvent issues with donor-recipient size mismatch; however, LLT imparts additional risks. Here, we review our experience using LLT and standard lung transplantation using a pediatric donor (PDLT) for adults with small chests.
