May 20: In addition to ongoing communication with CMS and its proposed revisions to the Interpretative Guidelines, The AST and ASTS were also asked to share their thoughts regarding a CMS memo on solid organ transplant program thresholds that was released on Friday, May 13, The memo outlines survey and certification guidance to interpret to the regulation related to the outcomes threshold for one year post-transplant patient deaths or graft failures.

July 8: Choosing between multiple living kidney donors, or evaluating offers in kidney paired donation, can be challenging because no metric currently exists for living donor quality. Furthermore, some deceased donor (DD) kidneys can result in better outcomes than some living donor kidneys, yet there is no way to compare them on the same scale. To better inform clinical decision-making, we created a living kidney donor profile index (LKDPI) on the same scale as the DD KDPI, using Cox regression and adjusting for recipient characteristics.

Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services
March 18: The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) published the original Interpretive
Guidelines in 2008 in policy memorandum SC-08-25, which were later updated through Survey
and Certification (S&C) policy memoranda. CMS has now updated the Organ Transplant
Interpretive Guidelines to incorporate previously-published changes, clarify certain areas, and
address feedback received based on previously-released drafts.

May 27: A man whose penis was removed because of cancer has received the first penis transplant in the United States, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Thomas Manning, 64, a bank courier from Halifax, Mass., underwent the 15-hour transplant operation on May 8 and 9. The organ came from a deceased donor.

The following is guidance developed by the OPTN/UNOS Ad Hoc Disease Transmission Advisory Committee (DTAC) with collaboration from the AST and ASTS and provides expert advice on donor screening and recipient testing for Zika virus.

Aug. 5: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is advising that the serious side effects associated with fluoroquinolone antibacterial drugs generally outweigh the benefits for patients with acute sinusitis, acute bronchitis, and uncomplicated urinary tract infections who have other treatment options. For patients with these conditions, fluoroquinolones should be reserved for those who do not have alternative treatment options.
