Introducing the Living Donor Circle of Excellence
AST
The AST is proud to introduce the Living Donor Circle of Excellence program! The vision for this program was inspired by the need to increase living organ donation by removing financial barriers donors sometimes encounter. Today, many employers do not offer any kind of compensation to an employee recovering from donating an organ. The Circle aims to change that. By recognizing companies who support living donation through providing salary support post-surgery, the AST envisions more people will consider this altruistic act.

Financial support for kidney transplant patients
    Promoted by Veloxis Pharmaceuticals
Immunosuppressive medications can be a financial burden for kidney transplant patients, potentially costing as much as $10,000 to $14,000 a year. These expenses can have a negative impact on patients’ lives and may play a role in medication nonadherence, which is associated with transplant failure. Learn more about support that is available with a free 30-day trial to allow your patients to start immediately at no cost. And, for patients who are eligible with commercial insurance coverage, a $0 co-pay card offers significant savings. Find out more Advertisement

Estimating Alloantibody Levels in Highly‐Sensitized Renal Allograft Candidates: Using Serial Dilutions to Demonstrate a Treatment Effect in Clinical Trials
    American Journal of Transplantation
Small reductions in cPRA are associated with increased kidney transplantation in 100% cPRA patients. However, the high level of antibody in these patients is such that desensitization may reduce antibody but not cPRA, thus the cPRA change on undiluted serum with desensitization is an insensitive measure of effectiveness.

Use of T Cell Mediated Immune Functional Assays for Adjustment of Immunosuppressive or Anti-infective Agents in Solid Organ Transplant Recipients: A Systematic Review
    Frontiers in Immunology
Defining the optimal dosage of the immunosuppressive or duration of anti-infective agents is a challenge in solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients. We aimed to systematically review the literature regarding the use of T cell mediated immune functional assays (IFAs) for adjustment of the immunosuppressive or anti-infective agents in SOT recipients.

i‐IFTA and Chronic Active T‐Cell Mediated Rejection: A Tale of 2 (DeKAF) Cohorts
    American Journal of Transplantation
Inflammation in areas of fibrosis (i‐IFTA) in posttransplant biopsies is part of the diagnostic criteria for chronic active TCMR (CA TCMR ‐‐ i‐IFTA≥2, ti≥2, t≥2). We evaluated i‐IFTA and CA TCMR in the DeKAF indication biopsy cohorts: prospective, (n=585, mean time to biopsy=1.7 years); cross‐sectional, (n=458, mean time to biopsy=7.8 years).

Normalization of Cerebral Blood Flow, Neurochemicals, and White Matter Integrity after Kidney Transplantation
Journal of the American Society of Nephrology
CKD is associated with abnormalities in cerebral blood flow, cerebral neurochemical concentrations, and white matter integrity. Each of these is associated with adverse clinical consequences in the non-CKD population, which may explain the high prevalence of dementia and stroke in ESKD. Because cognition improves after kidney transplantation, comparing these brain abnormalities before and after kidney transplantation may identify potential reversibility in ESKD-associated brain abnormalities.

Ex-situ Heart Perfusion — The Past, Present and Future
The Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation
Despite the advancements in medical treatment, mechanical support and stem cell therapy, heart transplantation remains the most effective treatment for selected patients with advanced heart failure. However, with an increase in heart failure prevalence worldwide, the gap between donor hearts and patients on the transplant waiting list keeps widening. Ex-situ machine perfusion has played a key role in augmenting heart transplant activities in the recent years, through enabling the usage of donation after circulatory death (DCD) hearts, allowing longer interval between procurement and implantation, and permitting safe use of some extended-criteria donation after brainstem death (DBD) hearts
