Durham, North Carolina-based Scinovia Corp.'s new imaging system to help surgeons monitor patients' blood flow during operations is moving closer to the market in 2016. Scinovia, founded in 2014, has three employees and a dozen contractors. Its technology was developed by a team of medical technology professionals assembled by Jim Sund, Ph.D., Scinovia's founder and CEO, from the alumni ranks of the three major Triangle-area universities: Duke, North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Wellspring, the leader in technology scouting, corporate venturing, and tech transfer software, has announced it has raised a $6 million Series B round led by Plymouth Ventures. The round also included participation by existing investor MK Capital. Founded as a spin-off by faculty and staff at Carnegie Mellon University, Wellspring will use the funds to scale sales and marketing of the company's next generation software platform used by corporate and university clients to find, manage and invest in emerging technologies.

University of Washington computer scientists and engineers, with a grant from the Seattle-based Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will develop, test and deploy new technological solutions to make financial products better and more available to the lowest-income people around the world. With a new $1.7 million, two-year grant awarded by the Gates Foundation in December, the UW Department of Computer Science & Engineering is establishing a new Digital Financial Services Research Group to investigate and overcome technological barriers to widespread adoption of mobile financial services.

A new "lab-to-business" accelerator has officially launched in Albuquerque with an initial cohort of three startups seeking to market University of New Mexico technologies. The City of Albuquerque approved a $200,000 grant this week for the new accelerator, dubbed "L2B," which will help scientists from the state's research universities and national laboratories transfer their innovations into the marketplace.
