Gene Patents: Getting Beyond Witch Trials
IP Watchdog
Share

A good old-fashioned witch trial can be jolly fun for most participants save one. They are briefly cathartic, providing accusers a platform to be sanctimonious while misleading a trusting public. Such efforts are best conducted behind closed doors as they lose credibility. This openness exposed claims that have driven the debate so far to a rare scrutiny. Perhaps the bonfires being prepared for the accused are premature.

Where are University Websites Hiding All Their Research?
The Guardian
Share

When scouring through university websites in search of their latest developments and projects, it became increasingly apparent this information was not always easily accessible to those outside the realm of academia at least.

Why Firms Don't Really Trust Universities
Freeky Business

Fairly regularly, a university or company builds on and commercializes its own discoveries. But often these organizations are actually building on the discoveries of others. This is possible because fundamental discoveries are often published in academic journals which are accessible to everyone. And that's where things get interesting. On whose discoveries are organizations actually building on when working on applied inventions?

If China Wants An Innovation-based Economy, It Will Need to Make Political and Institutional Changes
MIT Technology Review
Share

Universities in China are tightly controlled by the Ministry of Education. In comparison to their fiercely independent counterparts in the West, Chinese professors are like company employees. Research projects are often directed from the top down rather than being initiated by professors and researchers. The dissemination of research findings often has to take a back seat to the political need to maintain "stability."
