Patents, for all their flaws, are a widely-used proxy for innovation. And a new study from the Brookings Institution shows just how clustered patent-related innovation is in America. That cities are hot beds of creativity of all kinds is well known. But the Brookings study details just how concentrated an activity associated with scientific and technological innovation — patent filings — really is. People living in just 20 metro areas — home to 34 percent of the population — generate 63 percent of the nation's patents.

In November, a company founded by a student-faculty team at East Stroudsburg University launched its product, the Lyme-Aid Diagnostic Tick Testing Kit. It grew out of East Stroudsburg's Northeast Wildlife DNA Laboratory. And it happens to be the marketplace's first product that came from research at one of Pennsylvania's 14 state-owned universities.

Alpha Szenszor, a leading provider of carbon nanotube based sensors and the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology have announced a joint venture for the commercialization of advanced lung cancer diagnostics based on volatile organic compound detection from human breath. The two organizations plan to merge expertise to commercialize an economically viable, noninvasive, digital tool for the early diagnosis of lung cancer.

Eleven leading German OLED companies and research institutions announced the successful completion of the OLED organic light emitting diode related project, So-Light. The project was supported by the German Ministry of Education and Research over a 3 1/2 year period and addressed the complete value chain, from primary OLED materials through to OLED-lighting applications. Several of the promising innovations created within the project will now be brought to market by the participants.

Nap time paid off for Sue James, Ph.D. Inspiration struck 20 years ago after the engineer had a dream that led to the idea of developing a hybrid of a natural material and synthetic polymer that would look like cartilage to the body and not be rejected like other artificial materials. It's that last part that has the team working on a $300,000 subcontract with Drexel University on a Defense Advanced Research Project Agency project aimed at helping the Department of Defense beef up its computer security systems.
