Georgia Tech researchers create new pneumonia sampling device

Researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology have created a sampling device to diagnose pneumonia. PneumoniaCheck, the device will be commercially launched to health care professionals through a startup company, MD Innovate Inc. The device detects the lung pathogens causing pneumonia, according to David Ku, professor of mechanical engineering at Georgia Tech and professor of surgery at Emory University. More

In research aimed at making computers even smaller and more powerful, two engineers at Duke University in Durham, N.C., have made headway in the quest to control the beams of light generated by tiny lasers. The engineers — Nan Marie Jokerst, professor of electrical and computer engineering, and doctoral student Sabarni Palit — found solutions that could prove particularly useful in battery-powered computers, such as hand-held imaging and diagnostic devices. ALD technology to be commercialized for volume c-Si cells

Dutch research organization TNO spinoff company SoLayTec has received an investment from Rena and Brabant Development Agency to bring its atomic layer deposition (ALD) technology for volume manufacturing of crystalline silicon (c-Si) solar cells to commercialization. Research by the Technical University of Eindhoven has claimed that cell efficiencies can be improved by depositing aluminium oxide as a rear-surface-passivating dielectric layer to passivated emitter and rear cell-type c-Si solar cells, resulting in conversion efficiencies of 20.6 percent. Khalifa University signed a memorandum of understanding with the Sandia National Laboratories and the Texas Engineering Experiment Station of Texas A&M University System to develop and operate the Gulf Nuclear Energy Infrastructure Institute (GNEII). This agreement furthers the principles signed between the United States of America and the United Arab Emirates, concerning cooperation in peaceful uses of nuclear energy in April 2008. More
