If you're paying attention at all, you must have noticed that there are forces out there who just don't like what you do. Some say you're too focused on making money, some say you're not focused enough — we really should introduce these folks to each other — some don't believe it's moral for universities to work with industry, and many have built very successful careers launching attack after attack on Bayh-Dole and the very patent system itself. And they are not going away.

Washington University Licenses 'Miracle Molecule' to California Firm

Washington University has signed over exclusive worldwide patent rights to a recently discovered vitamin to ChromaDex, an Irvine, Calif.-based natural products company that provides ingredients to the dietary supplement, food and beverage, animal health, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. The patent was for nicotinamide riboside, which has been dubbed a "miracle molecule" by researchers and sciences reporters.

That equation is going to be tested in a different way as the brand new "Michigan I-Corps" program is rolled out. Bark Beetle Research Wins Startup $50K Competition Award

A startup company that uses the enzymes of bark beetles to control the devastating effects the beetles can have on a forest was awarded the $50,000 gold prize as winner of the University of Nevada, Reno's Sontag Entrepreneurship Competition. The company discovered the beetle enzymes also have potential uses in a wide range of products, including the pesticide and insect attractant application which the company has selected as the starting point for its business venture.
