Magnetic Bacteria to Build Future Bio-Computers

Researchers have suggested that magnet-making bacteria may be used for building biological computers of the future. A team from the UK's University of Leeds and Japan's Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology have used microbes that eat iron. As they ingest the iron, the microbes create tiny magnets inside themselves, similar to those in PC hard drives. The research may lead to the creation of much faster hard drives, the team of scientists say. As technology progresses and computer components get smaller and smaller, it becomes harder to produce electronics on a nano-scale. More

Nanoco, a quantum dot producer which grew out of a university spin-out, has taken a significant stride to becoming one of the UK's most significant nanotechnology companies thanks to the UK Nanotechnology Knowledge Transfer Network (NanoKTN). The nanotechnology company was initially formed at the University of Manchester and has since risen to become a world-leader in the development and manufacture of cadmium-free quantum dots. The company, which for the first time has allowed the mass production of quantum dots, has managed to secure commercial agreements with several blue-chip industrial and consumer goods organizations, in product areas including electronics, lighting and solar photovoltaic technology with the help of the NanoKTN. Researchers at the University of Michigan Health System have discovered the type of cell that appears to cause asthma symptoms even when treated by medicine from an inhaler. The findings may help scientists develop new treatment options, and could assist in identifying asthma patients at risk of becoming resistant to steroid treatments, U-M officials said. Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition in which air passages are inflamed, affecting the nerve endings in the airways so they are easily irritated. During an asthma attack the lining of airway passages swell and become narrower, reducing the flow of air in and out of the lungs. More

A team of seniors designed and built a transcutaneous energy-transfer (TET) unit to power a minimally invasive ventricular assist device (VAD) being created by a Houston company. The VAD is a tiny pump inserted into the aorta via a catheter that helps increase blood flow and heal patients with heart failure. Rice tCoil—Michael Torre, Erin Watson, Tyler Young, Trevor Mitcham, Hana Wang and Alex Dobranich—made a complementary device that sits a centimeter under the skin and feeds power to the VAD. The challenge presented to the seniors, who were required to complete a capstone design project by Rice’s George R. Brown School of Engineering, was to charge the unit wirelessly. More

If one didn't know better, Dean Hendrickson's collection of life-like looking slabs of skin in his office would put him in the serial killer suspect category. But fortunately for future surgeons, Hendrickson, 49, director of the CSU veterinary teaching hospital, is using his powers for good by founding SurgiReal products, a new startup company along with Fausto Bellezzo, a Colorado State University vet school surgeon, which produces realistic synthetic skin pads upon which students can practice cutting and suturing. Graphene "Spintronics" to Make Electronic Devices Faster

Researchers at University of Kentucky and University of South Florida have developed "spintronics" based on graphene, which promises to make electronic devices smaller and much faster than today's silicon-based technology. Spin is a quantum mechanical property that has a binary directional value, either "up" or "down." This is analogous to the "on/off" property that enables binary digital coding in modern computers. Cornell University researchers have demonstrated a new strategy for making energy-efficient, reliable nonvolatile magnetic memory devices—which retain information without electric power. Reported online in Science, the researchers use a physical phenomenon called the spin Hall effect, that turns out to be useful for memory applications because it can switch magnetic poles back and forth—the basic mechanism needed to make magnet-based computer memory.
