Gaining weight is bad enough, but tracking the pounds can be nearly impossible if mobility issues keep you from getting to the scale. Researchers at the Human Engineering Research Laboratories in Pittsburgh say they have the answer: An electronic hockey puck-size sensor that fits under each leg of a patient's bed. Now, a Richmond, Virginia-based startup is preparing to market the device. The sensor was developed in the lab of Jonathan Pearlman, the research facility's associate director of product innovation and translation. Measuring weights is just the start.

Under normal circumstances, the immune system recognizes and successfully fights cancer cells, eliminating them as they develop. However, sometimes the process breaks down and tumors form, and now we know why. Researchers at the Texas A&M Health Science Center found that when cancer cells are able to block the function of a gene called NLRC5, they are able to evade the immune system and proliferate, according to research published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).
