Integrating the Federal R&D System into the Economy

A tremendous potential asset the U.S. enjoys is possession of the greatest public research system in history. It's staffed by some of the most creative people in the world working in state of the art facilities performing cutting-edge research in every field of science. The system designed after World War II does exceedingly well in what it was intended to do: pushing forward the frontiers of science; and helping federal agencies meet their mission needs. However, neither goal is oriented toward the commercialization of resulting discoveries by our private sector. And therein lies the rub.

Commercializing University Research a Tricky Process

Supporters and critics of commercialization agree that without private sector cash, many breakthroughs and inventions might not make it out of the lab and into market. Many professors are keen to move into a commercial aspect of their research. But the province needs to keep its eyes wide open as it goes down this road, says Tim Caulfield, BSc, LL.B., LL.M., an expert in health research ethics at the University of Alberta who has written extensively on the impact of "creeping commercialization" on campuses.

3-D bioprinting recently made a dramatic move from the world of science fiction and researcher's fantasy to the real world of saving a baby's life at the University of Michigan. When a child's life was in danger due to difficulty breathing, two faculty members at the University of Michigan applied for and received emergency clearance from the Food and Drug Administration to create and implant a tracheal splint made from polycaprolactone, one of many medical plastics that qualify as biomaterials.

New Wireless Electronics Could Heal Wounds and Then Dissolve

Nestled inside a wound, a remote-controlled device perks up and begins releasing bacteria-killing heat, a form of thermal therapy that can fell even the most drug-resistant microbes. After it does its job, the electronic heater dissolves, and its biocompatible ingredients become part of the person it has helped to heal. Though not quite a reality yet, this scenario isn't too far off.

Researchers Develop Software for New Cancer Screening Method

A new breast imaging technology called microwave tomography can make cancer screening more comfortable and less expensive. The patient simply lies on a special table placing the breast in a compartment filled with gel, and then the image is taken by the technician. Human testing is being done in South Korea, while the software is being developed by two South Dakota State University computer science professors.
