The latest Hoosier inventions are emerging from the bustling orthopedic industry in Warsaw, from faculty laboratories at Indiana's flagship universities, and from healthcare firms across central Indiana, including Cook Medical Technologies. It's all adding up to one thing: Indiana is experiencing a patent renaissance. Indiana inventors secured 30 percent more patents — intellectual property rights granted to inventors by the federal government — in 2015 than they did four years earlier, according to data compiled by Carmel patent valuation company Pellegrino & Associates.

University of Connecticut officials joined project engineers, union workers, legislators and others Tuesday to celebrate symbolic completion of the structural phase of UConn's new Innovation Partnership Building in Storrs, Connecticut. The $132 million Innovation Partnership Building (IPB) will allow for greater public-private research collaboration. The 115,000-square-foot facility is bringing together world-class academic researchers, business entrepreneurs and private industry scientists to develop innovative technologies in flexible electronics, materials science, additive manufacturing, cybersecurity, energy and other fields.

Perovskite solar cell technology is likely to be commercialized sometime between the years of 2019 and 2021 — owing to improving technology and emerging university + commercial partnerships — according to a new report from Lux Research. The report notes that, while problems remain with the technology, "new opportunities" for commercial firms to partner with universities and research centers are emerging.

G-J van Rooyen, chief executive officer of South African startup Custos Media Technologies, knows a thing or two about how valuable the support of a university can be to a newly-founded startup. Custos, which looks to combat digital piracy by embedding bitcoin bounties as watermarks within videos and movies, was not only founded by van Rooyen, an academic at Stellenbosch University, but was also incubated at the university's LaunchLab incubator and received its first funding round from Innovus Technology Transfer, the university's industry interaction and innovation company.
