When amicable efforts fail to resolve a dispute concerning patent rights and the aggrieved party wishes to pursue the matter further, it usually initiates litigation or perhaps a U.S. International Trade Commission investigation, despite the huge costs of such options, because it may assume no other plausible alternatives exist to achieve the desired objectives. Articles, such as this one, tout arbitration as an alternative: faster, cheaper and more confidential than litigation, with other benefits as well.

Patent trolls have been put on notice: The administration and members of Congress from both sides of the aisle intend to shut them down. "Reforming the patent system to end frivolous lawsuits by bad actors will enhance the innovation ecosystem, and we appreciate the urgency the White House has put behind this initiative," said Kevin Richards, SVP for federal government affairs at TechAmerica.

SilcsBio Inks Licensing Deal with University of Maryland, Baltimore

Baltimore biotech company SilcsBio LLC has finalized a technology licensing agreement with the University of Maryland, Baltimore. The agreement for a protein analysis technology will serve as the core of SilcsBio's line of software programs that can be used to help develop drugs. The two developed a way to analyze the surface of a protein and determine how the protein reacts to chemicals.

A new technology under development by an academic–industry partnership protects oral vaccines from destruction by the digestive system. A new technology that can safely deliver friendly bacteria to the gut is under development by an academic-industry collaboration as an oral vaccine, and Phase I clinical trials are planned. Developed by the University of Cambridge Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, the technology has been licensed by biotechnology company Prokarium through Cambridge Enterprise Ltd., the university's commercialization arm.

Why Business Should Do More to Commercialize University Research

Businesses aren't doing their part to help commercialize university research in Canada, according to a new C.D. Howe Institute report. Canadian universities spend more than $11 billion a year on research and development — more per capita than U.S. universities — but they are laggards when it comes to "technology transfer," concludes social scientist Peter Howitt, professor emeritus at Brown University and a C.D. Howe resident fellow.

Energy Biosciences Institute Granted Patent for Biofuels

The Energy Biosciences Institute, a research program that partners with UC Berkeley and is funded by energy company BP, announced the recent awarding of its first intellectual property patent since the institute's formation in 2007. The patent, originally granted in April, is entitled "Methods and compositions for improving sugar transport, mixed sugar fermentation and production of biofuels" and brings researchers closer to developing biofuels from plant cell wall materials.
University of Akron Receives NSF Grant to Encourage Innovation

The University of Akron has received a $300,000, three-year grant from the National Science Foundation to help students turn research into commercially viable projects. The university was designated by the federal foundation as an I-Corps site, to allow students to work with faculty and a business mentor from outside the university to test and demonstrate the marketability of their innovation before seeking additional investment.
