Johns Hopkins University
A group of cancer centers from four leading academic institutions has announced the establishment of a research consortium to accelerate the discovery and development of cancer therapeutics and diagnostics, with the goal of creating high-impact research programs to discover new cancer treatments. The consortium will bring together researchers from the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins, the Abramson Cancer Center at the University of Pennsylvania, The Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center at Columbia University Medical Center and The Tisch Cancer Institute at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Utah State University is working to test and hopefully commercialize a new ground sensor that can measure water flow in soils — an instrument that would be critical to helping water managers understand water supply and act as a more efficient alternative to other instruments. Scott Jones, professor of environmental soil physics, and Logan-based Apogee Instruments are using funding from the Utah Science Technology and Research initiative to compare their sensors to heat flux plates, underground instruments that measure water and soil activity.

The University System of Maryland plans to establish a $25 million fund to invest in startup companies created by students, faculty and graduates. Multiple news organizations report that the Board of Regents committee approved the fund on Thursday. The fund would require the system to invest $10 million over the next four years, and the remainder would be raised from venture funds, state funds and other sources. That fund is intended to offer investments between $50,000 and $500,000.

At a recent gathering called Opt412 about optimizing the potential for Pittsburgh, an engaged crowd of several hundred listened to thoughtful conversations about various aspects of the city. When former Pittsburgh Mayor Tom Murphy got to the microphone, following several other speakers early in the day, he made an interesting observation. "You know I find it ironic, in the discussion I've heard so far today, that we're at the University of Pittsburgh but it’s never been mentioned," he said. "The conversation has been about Carnegie Mellon University. Why is that?"
Good question. It's not unusual for Carnegie Mellon to steal the spotlight, with its stellar reputation for startups and technology, robotics and innovative ways.

AUTM is proud to announce the receipt of the Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Guidance Grant to support the development of its Technology Transfer Training Program. The program was created to provide extensive training for science and engineering students who are interested in a career in academic technology transfer with the goal of placing them in technology transfer offices.
The eight-month internship will identify, train and prepare graduate and post-doctoral students to transition into the world of academic technology transfer. Deadline for applying is Thursday, June 30.
