Rochester Colleges to Play Big Role in Photonics

The University of Rochester not only has the brainpower to help implement the new manufacturing institute for photonics unveiled Monday, but also hopes to steer the initiative to benefit the local economy. How much say UR and other players will have in decisions is hard to say because Vice President Joe Biden did not spell out details of the American Institute for Manufacturing Photonics in his announcement Monday.

Researchers Find a Way to Capture, Use Lost Solar Energy

A team of chemists at the University of California, Riverside has found a way to boost solar photovoltaic efficiencies by 30 percent or more. By combining inorganic semiconductor nanocrystals with organic molecules, they have succeeded in "upconverting" photons in the visible and near-infrared regions of the solar spectrum.

Texas Develops More Energy Efficient Window

Researchers at the Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin are one step closer to delivering smart windows that have a new level of energy efficiency. Their research has created new materials that allow windows to transmit light without transferring heat, or conversely to block light while allowing heat transmission, as described in two new research papers.

Arizona's Tech Transfer Arm Hits 2015 goals

The University of Arizona says its technology commercialization arm hit all of its goals in its second full fiscal year of operations, including logging more than 200 faculty invention disclosures and forming 12 startup licensee companies. Tech Launch Arizona also topped the prior year's results in patents filed and issued, exclusive license and option agreements and license royalties, in the recently ended 2015 fiscal year, the UA said.
