Ohio State Chemists Have Grown a Brain from Skin Cells — and They
Think It Could Be a Business

Ohio State University chemists have grown a nearly complete embryonic brain in a dish from adult skin cells — and they think it could be a business. Rene Anand, professor of biological chemistry, pharmacology and neuroscience, introduced the "organoid" he'd grown at a scientific conference this week. The university describes it as about the size of a pencil eraser and developed with neural structures analogous to a 5-week-old human embryo, but it lacks blood vessels.
UMass Awarded a Record Number of Patents This Year

The University of Massachusetts has been awarded a record number of U.S. patents during the fiscal year 2015 to advance the fields of life sciences, agriculture, plastics engineering and gene therapy, among others. The university was awarded 65 patents, earning $34 million in licensing income from the commercialization of its patented faculty inventions during fiscal year 2015, up from $31 million during the same period last year.
$100,000 Competition to Stimulate Innovative Clean Technology

The University of California, Berkeley is encouraging students with game-changing ideas in clean energy technology to compete for a campus boot camp designed to shepherd the technology into the marketplace. Between six and eight student-led groups will be chosen from around the country for the Berkeley Cleantech University Prize (CUP), which will fund the teams during the fall semester as they take advantage of the campus' incubators and accelerators, which are now primarily helping UC Berkeley students launch startups.
EERC Sees Some Financial Improvement, Chips Away at Deficit

The University of North Dakota's Energy and Environmental Research Center brought in more awarded-contract dollars last year and its deficit shrunk. During the fiscal year that ended June 30, the EERC received $28.4 million in new awards, a 16 percent increase over the previous year when awards totaled $24.5 million. One year prior, the center had $35.3 million in new awards and the year before there were $32.1 million, according to data provided via email.
