A specialized drug screen test using lab-grown human cells has revealed two classes of compounds already in the pharmaceutical arsenal that may work against mosquito-borne Zika virus infections, scientists say. In a summary of their work, published in Nature Medicine, the investigators say they screened 6,000 existing compounds currently in late-stage clinical trials or already approved for human use for other conditions. The screening process identified several compounds that showed the ability to hinder or halt the progress of the Zika virus in lab-grown human neural cells.

Stephen Thorne, a University of Pittsburgh professor of immunology, wanted to push his therapy into clinical trials, a step that would make the treatment available to patients for the first time but cost millions of dollars. So Thorne, the university and Kurt Rote, a biotech entrepreneur from Cleveland with a background in biomedical engineering and an MBA, worked together to create Western Oncolytics, a Pitt spinoff company founded in 2014 that raised $2.5 million in less than a year, something it would have taken Thorne years to do in the university setting.

An Oregon renewable energy clean technology startup has been awarded $175,000 in follow-on funding. The company, eChemion, has developed a chemical treatment technology that triples the life of batteries used to store renewable energy. With the recent round of funding, Oregon BEST, the state's leading cleantech accelerator, has provided the company with $250,000 to develop its product.

Promising anticancer immunotherapy technologies developed by a pair of star researchers at the University of Minnesota have been licensed and put on a fast track to commercialization by a veteran biotech entrepreneur. Oxis International and its wholly owned subsidiary, Oxis Biotech Inc., are based in Tampa, Florida, and led by Anthony Cataldo, whose long entrepreneurial history spans several different industries. Before assuming the helm of Oxis in 2014, his most notable biotech achievement was building Lion Biotechnologies into a $500 million market-cap company through the development of licensed immunotherapies targeting metastatic melanoma.
