While there is an overall positive shift in the attitude of faculty researchers towards commercialization, we can do much more to stimulate faculty's interest in commercial development. How do we motivate faculty to learn more about the process, including the needs and timelines of commercial partners?
Using real-life examples, we'll discuss proven approaches as well as those still being tested. Competitions, faculty workshops, lectures, company visits and exchanges are among the highlighted examples. Other techniques include formation of alliances with large companies and hiring scouting staff to proactively seek potential technologies. We'll discuss everything -from communications with lab members to tenure track requirements and policy changes.

Sitting in a stifling subway car or walking Boston's cold winter streets may soon become more bearable, thanks to a "personal thermostat" wristband being released by MIT spinout Embr Labs.
For a design competition in 2013, four MIT engineering students created a smart wristband, called Wristify, that makes its wearer feel warmer or cooler through its contact with the skin on the wrist. After much fanfare, and a lot of research and development, the wristband will hit the shelves early next year.

The University of Delaware will partner with Delaware State University thanks to a recent supplemental grant from the National Science Foundation. The $60,000 grant allows Delaware's largest university to join forces with Delaware State "to aid their researchers in commercializing scientific discoveries," according to a press release.
