Purdue University
Purdue University researchers have invented a new smart drainage device to help patients with glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness in the world, as they try to save their eyesight.
Glaucoma can be treated only with medications or surgical implants, both of which offer varying degrees of success in helping to improve sight and to relieve pressure buildup inside the eye. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says about 3 million Americans have glaucoma.

West Virginia University will continue its focus on technology in entrepreneurship after alumnus John Chambers has announced plans to devote time and resources to a new startup program at the university during a news conference at the Erickson Alumni Center.
The College of Business and Economics signed a $1.8 million lease to create a new startup program in September and, as of Friday, the college will be named the John Chambers College of Business and Economics, in honor of the Charleston native.

Industry experts forecast that more than 20 billion wireless devices of all types — from smart TVs, phones and home appliances to health care monitors and manufacturing process controls — will be connected worldwide via the emerging Internet of Things (IoT) by 2020. Malicious cyber activity, which cost the U.S. economy $57 to $109 billion in 2016 alone, is expected to rise by 22 percent each year, disrupting both consumer and business use of these devices and putting the economy at risk.
A team of electrical engineers, led by assistant professor and principal investigator Fatemeh Afghah of Northern Arizona University's School of Informatics, Computing, and Cyber Systems (SICCS), was recently awarded a $750,000 grant by the National Science Foundation's Partnerships for Innovation Program to develop and commercialize a next-generation cryptosystem, or security platform, capable of protecting IoT devices from cybersecurity attacks through more advanced authentication procedures.

The AUTM Mentorship Program is an opportunity for early-stage and mid-career professionals with a thirst for knowledge to establish one-on-one relationships with experts in the industry in an effort to transfer knowledge of University technology management, exchange ideas, and encourage professional development. There is no cost to participate in the program. Mentees and mentors must commit to at least 1 hour per month for a telephone call, and complete a survey at the conclusion of the program.

Registered Technology Transfer Professional (RTTP) designation recognizes the skills, knowledge, and deal-making expertise of technology transfer professionals. The next submission date for RTTP applications is Thursday, Jan. 17, 2019.
New to the profession? Do you have at least six months of experience in your TTO position? If so, Candidate RTTP is a new designation that allows those entering the profession to signal they have committed to a pathway of training and development leading to the award of full RTTP status.
