Sparks flew as high school students from around the Coastal Bend put their welding skills to the test. Over at Nueces County Junior Livestock Show, the annual welding competition pits students against each other but the contest is anything but amateur. About 160 student welders took part in the challenge, gaining valuable hands-on experience they can take with them further in life. As the American Welding Society's chairman explained, the welders are judged on a professional level.

As component and subsystem manufacturers in military and aerospace are relying more heavily on the precision of laser welding over other welding techniques ― such as Arc or Tig welding ― they’re also under continuous pressure to improve their quality levels and lot-to-lot traceability. Though laser welding procedures have long been performed “under the hood” in non-pressurized and negatively pressurized gloveboxes or enclosures, next-generation laser welding systems are now being engineered in positively pressurized gloveboxes with controlled atmospheres. With these systems, purifying gas (typically Argon) is introduced and monitored to create an optimal environment in which to laser weld.

Florida Panhandle Technical College (FPTC) has big plans to further the college’s contribution to economic development should the state approve a request for $9.1 million in funding through the Florida Job Growth Grant Fund. The $85 million fund was created last year as a compromise after a legislative battle about economic-development incentives. The college applied for funds to construct the FPTC 3D Health Institute and FPTC 3D Welding Institute, proposals which are expected to boost the workforce through expanded education opportunities in some of the fastest growing career fields.

Not only did Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds compliment the West Delaware/NICC welding program in her Condition of the State address, but a group of students got to go to the State Capitol to see her speech in person.
Reynolds highlighted West Delaware and NICC and their partnership with Henderson Products to create the welding program that gives so many high school kids a head start on learning a skilled trade.

A welding boot camp for adults that is an eight-week crash course will be offered by Butte County (California) Office of Education, with the registration deadline soon.
The goal is to get adults into a skilled job as soon as possible.
The deadline to register for the welding boot camp is when the class is filled or Jan. 18. There are two sessions, Jan. 22 through March 14 with class on Mondays and Wednesdays for four hours a day; or Jan 23 through March 15 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Classes are 8 a.m. to noon, to be held in Chico.
