Manufacturing's heavy lifting within the US economy
Forbes    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Within hours of each other, officials in North and South Carolina recently announced nearly 1,400 jobs tied to ramped-up manufacturing in those states — the latest evidence that manufacturing so far is doing the heavy lifting of the U.S. economic recovery. Freightliner Trucks, a division of Daimler, said it would hire back some of the workers it laid off in 2009 as it adds another shift at its Cleveland, N.C., plant producing long-haul trucks. And BMW's plant in Greer, S.C., said it was boosting production of the automaker's X-class vehicles. Reports on manufacturers' outlook on business and on business inventories have hinted at continued growth by the sector in 2012. More

Role reversal: Employers say they can't find workers
MSNBC    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
With 13 million unemployed people seeking work in this country, it would seem like anyone who wants to hire someone would have little difficulty doing so. But that's not what many employers are saying. More than half of U.S. employers surveyed by the staffing firm Manpower Group last year said they were having trouble filling job openings because they couldn't find qualified workers. That’s a huge 38 percentage point jump from 2010, when only 14 percent said they were having trouble filling positions. More

Booming business: Man uses cannons to teach welding
The Joplin Globe    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It's highly doubtful that Clifford Russell of Lamar, Mo., would be in violation of Missouri's concealed carry gun laws, because his personal firearm weighs nearly 100 pounds and fires a projectile a half-mile downrange in a cloud of sooty smoke. When he worked as a welding instructor for Franklin Technology Center in Lamar, he had his students build cannons as part of their semester project. "What better way to test [how good] their welds are than to" try to blow them up, he said. "So I taught them how to build the cannons, how to take them to the machine shop, how to lathe them and make them look like they were made in a foundry, how to weld all the major pieces together. Every aspect of it. And they even got a little history lesson out of it at the same time." More

Industrial production in US probably rebounded
Bloomberg    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Industrial production in the U.S. probably rebounded in December, a sign that manufacturing was weathering a global slowdown at the end of last year, economists said. Production at factories, mines and utilities increased 0.5 percent after declining 0.2 percent in November, according to the median forecast of 80 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News. Confidence improved among homebuilders this month and wholesale prices were little changed in December, other data may show. More

Demand for welders grows in Ohio valley region
The Times-Reporter    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Demand — always strong through the years — is heating up for welders in the Tuscarawas Valley region in Ohio, with the latest push coming from the oil and gas industry. "Representatives of oil and gas companies have told us they expect to attract welders who are currently working at other jobs to become welders for their industry," said Erin VanFossen, assistant director of Adult Workforce Education at Buckeye Career Center in New Philadelphia, Ohio. "That will create openings, and we're working to train people to replace those welders." More

GE invests $1 billion in high-tech plants to open US manufacturing jobs
R&D Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Millions of Americans go online to look for a new job. Now GE is using the same technology that forms the backbone of the Internet to open new U.S. manufacturing jobs. That technology is a massive new data center, which opened at GE's Appliance Park in Louisville, Ky., last year. The data center provides GE plants with tremendous computing power that allows them to implement new information systems, boost efficiency and productivity, cut costs, and make American manufacturing competitive. The data center, which is operated by GE's Appliances & Lighting division, is part of a $1 billion drive to bring new appliance lines to the U.S. and open 1,300 new jobs at GE plants in Louisville, Bloomington, Indiana, and Decatur, Ga. Kennametal CEO: Public needs to be educated about manufacturing
Business Journal Daily    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Americans of all ages apparently are unaware that manufacturing is leading the economic recovery, and believe manufacturing jobs are unavailable. As such, manufacturing industry leaders need to more clearly articulate their success stories and educate young workers about viable manufacturing careers. Such is the advice of Carlos Cardoso, chairman, president and CEO of Kennametal Inc., of Latrobe, Pa. He recently addressed a National Press Club meeting. More

Welding mentors in Oregon help people succeed
Statesman Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When two seasoned welders met a couple of years ago, they wanted to find a way to help other people interested in the industry learn the skills. That's when Dave Rabe and James Stanton decided to form R & S Welding Mentors LLC. They started their mentoring program in Keizer, Ore., last February, but moved it to South Salem a few months later, Stanton said. The pair established their mentoring program to help displaced workers, people wanting to change careers or people wanting to learn a new skill set. More
