Veterans help manufacturers plug skills gap
Reuters    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Three years ago Gabe Collins was on the front line in Kandahar province, one of the most dangerous places in war-ravaged Afghanistan, conducting search and rescue missions with the U.S. Navy. These days the 25-year-old, who also served in the Iraq war, is an aircraft engine mechanic at global aerospace firm AAR's plant in Hot Springs, Ark. He is applying skills honed while working on helicopters during his eight years of service in the Navy. About 1,000 miles away in Miami, 37 year-old Ruben Henao, also a veteran of the Iraq war, inspects aircraft landing gear at another AAR plant. The two men are among hundreds of military veterans who have been tapped by manufacturing companies that are facing a critical shortage of skilled workers. According to a joint study by Deloitte and the Manufacturing Institute, manufacturing companies have roughly 600,000 vacancies they are struggling to fill. More

White House offers plan to lure jobs to America
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In his State of the Union address, President Barack Obama called for a wide-ranging package of policies to help create American manufacturing jobs, including trade enforcement measures, business tax breaks and worker training programs. In many ways, the proposal is surprising, as few economists now consider manufacturing a potent engine for job growth in the United States. Manufacturers have added about 330,000 jobs in the country in the last two years. But the growth followed three decades of decline, during which companies like automakers and textile companies slashed payrolls by about 7.5 million. That has led many economists to say the recent turnaround might be nothing more than a correction from the depths of the recession. More

Idaho high schoolers give their take on the trade skills gap
KTVB-TV    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
There are plenty of jobs in Idaho and across the nation that can't be filled because there's not enough skilled welders, electricians, or technicians to fill them. Trades are the biggest gap in the skills gap. But why? Why aren't more young people interested in getting into the trades? KTVB-TV tried to find out. Their first stop was at Mountain View High School in Meridian, Idaho. More

At least $34K in fines for Wyoming oil blast
The Billings Gazette    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Workplace safety citations that Wyoming issued to two companies for an oil facility explosion that killed three workers last summer carry more than $34,000 in fines. The citations allege four violations by Tulsa, Okla.-based Samson Resources, carrying $19,800 in fines. Double D Welding and Fabrication in Mills, Wyo., was cited for eight alleged infractions resulting in $14,850 in fines. A third, unidentified company also was cited, but the details were not released. The Wyoming Workers' Safety and Compensation Division released the citations for Samson, and for Double D Welding and Fabrication to The Associated Press after the AP filed a records request seeking. Manufacturing jobs start year with strong gains
USA Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The surprisingly strong recent jobs report spotlighted healthy employment gains in manufacturing — an industry that was expected to be hampered by Europe's economic downturn this year. So far, the nation's factories are defying the gloomy forecasts, adding 50,000 jobs in January — their strongest showing in a year — on top of 32,000 in December, the Labor Department said. Overall, employers added 243,000 jobs in January, the most in nine months. Manufacturing was the second-biggest gainer, behind professional and business services. More

Manufacturing and construction showing growth
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Manufacturing activity in the United States grew in January at the fastest pace in seven months, helped by a rise in new orders. And builders ended a poor year for construction by spending more on homes and projects for the fifth straight month. Reports on the sectors bolstered other data showing that the economy started the year strong. The Institute for Supply Management, a trade group of purchasing managers, said its manufacturing index rose last month to 54.1 from 53.1 in December. Readings above 50 indicate expansion. More

Ohio teacher: Learn to be a welder and jobs will be plentiful
The Repository    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Welding instructor Richard Thomas of Timken High School in Canton, Ohio, theorizes the current dearth of trained/certified welders can be traced to the advent of the computer. "That started 20 years ago when computers took over, and people were saying, 'Oh, you need to go to college and get into computers. You don't want to weld. It's hard work.' And they started shying away from it," he said. More
