From violin maker to welder: Blue Barn brings a personal flair to fabrication
The Welder
Fabricators have an amazing ability to adjust when the situation requires. An example is Jason Hoynash, who spent 13 years as a violin maker before going into business for himself full time as a custom fabricator focusing mostly on commercial projects. Metal fabrication and design gave him what violin making couldn't: A license for creativity and a reprieve from the repetitive while still allowing him to work with his hands.

Consumables Corner: Welding duplex stainless steels
The Welder
Duplex stainless steels have a two-phase microstructure containing ferrite and austenite in volumetric fractions approximately equal to 50%. Due to their two-phase microstructure, these steels combine the best properties of ferritic and austenitic stainless steels. In general, the ferrite phase (body-centered cubic lattice) provides high mechanical strength, good toughness, and good corrosion resistance while the austenitic phase (face-centered cubic lattice) provides good ductility.

Smithville student welders win big
My Courier Tribune
Five Smithville High School senior Warriors competed Jan. 27 at the Missouri Welding Institute in Nevada, Missouri with over 400 other students from across Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma. According to the Occupational Handbook, the median annual wage for welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers was $44,190 in May 2020 with employment projected to grow more than 8% from 2020 to 2030. About 49,200 openings for welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers are projected each year, on average, over the decade. Many of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force, such as to retire.
