Additive manufacturing is reshaping aviation
MIT Technology Review
The aviation company Pratt & Whitney is exploring whether technology known as additive manufacturing could be used to develop more compact jet engines that could make commercial airplanes lighter and more fuel-efficient. Pratt & Whitney already uses two additive manufacturing techniques to make some engine components. Instead of casting metal in a mold, the methods involve forming solid objects by partially melting a metal powder with either a laser or an electron beam. Other aircraft makers use similar technology; GE, for example, creates fuel nozzles for jet engines using its own additive manufacturing techniques.

AWS 9th Shipbuilding Conference
Sheraton Virginia Beach Oceanfront Hotel
April 7-8, 2015
Virginia Beach, VA

The conference will include a technical program featuring presentations on additive manufacturing, automation, new filler materials and NDT. Presenters will discuss a newly developed welding electrode that upon cooling does not shrink which will help reduce distortion effects and perhaps negate the need for weld toe peening required for fatigue life extension. The latest in aluminum welding from a true expert in the field will be presented. Several presenters will highlight new methods of automating the welding operations in shipyards. The recently introduced NDT method of computed RT will be discussed as well as the use of artificial intelligence as applied to NDT. As keynote speaker, Johnnie DeLoach the Head of the Materials Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division will kick off the conference.

New adhesives compete with fasteners, welding
Assembly Magazine
The Assembly Show featured not only the machinery needed to assemble parts, but also the supplies, such as fasteners and adhesives. It may not be as "sexy" as a robot or a high-speed automated assembly system, but one of the most interesting new products that was introduced at the show was actually an adhesive.
