Manufacturing and construction showing growth
The New York Times    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Manufacturing activity in the United States grew in January at the fastest pace in seven months, helped by a rise in new orders. And builders ended a poor year for construction by spending more on homes and projects for the fifth straight month. Reports on the sectors bolstered other data showing that the economy started the year strong. The Institute for Supply Management, a trade group of purchasing managers, said its manufacturing index rose last month to 54.1 from 53.1 in December. Readings above 50 indicate expansion. More

GMAW guns, consumables, more: 7 common questions answered    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Gas metal arc welding involves more than just arc-on time. Welding operators also need to be mindful of other factors that contribute to the overall productivity and quality of their welding operation, such as joint preparation, weld parameters, and part fit-up. Selecting the proper GMAW gun, consumables, and shielding gas are critical to achieving good results. Unfortunately, welders often are confused as to how these components affect the welding operation. The reality is that they can have a significant impact on downtime and costs, not to mention operator comfort. The goal is to make sure that impact is positive. The following are a few guidelines to consider when selecting and using GMAW equipment and consumables to help improve productivity and quality in your welding operation. More

Manufacturing is special: Why America needs its makers
Reuters via The Atlantic    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
There's a common refrain among mainstream economists that, when it comes to America's long-term growth, it doesn't matter whether the country has a strong manufacturing base. Nor, they say, does having a healthy industrial structure create greater income equality. If we want growth and fairness, the thinking goes, we shouldn't focus on specific industries. We should pursue broad policies, such as investment in education and progressive income taxation.

  • Hire new employees

Tim Worstall: That sucking sound of manufacturing jobs going to China
Forbes    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It's one of those things we're continually told, isn't it, that all the good, well paid, manufacturing jobs have been packed up and shipped off to China. That's what ails the American economy, that we just don't manufacture anything any more. There's a couple of little facts that rather refute this story. The first is that American manufacturing output continues to rise. Yes, really, even as manufacturing employment falls, manufacturing output is still going up. The second point is this rather remarkable but under-remarked one: That China lost 16 million manufacturing jobs between 1995 and 2002. More

Thirteen years later, the man who doesn't even possess an associate degree is one of five recipients of the George Fridell Excellence in Teaching Award. More

Opinion: Job training a crucial conduit
Bangor Daily News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Along with four-year and community college education, short-term job training is a crucial component of a comprehensive plan to grow the economy. Maine Gov. Paul LePage's plan to consolidate the oversight of training funds while widening the regional investment of those funds is a smart strategy. Job-specific training often is the best approach for older workers, whose family responsibilities and ties to a home limit their options to pursue a traditional college education. Such training also is a quick way to get displaced workers — those who have worked in an industry where jobs are shrinking — back to work. More

Are we at the start of a factory renaissance?
Zacks via Yahoo Finance    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In January, the U.S. added 50,000 manufacturing jobs, the largest amount since January 2011. However, the performance is even more impressive than that would imply. Since 1990, we have only seen that level of factory job growth matched or exceeded five times, or 2.3 percent of the time. Looking even further back to 1980, we have added 50,000 or more factory jobs in just 28 months, or 7.3 percent of the time. Even if we go back to 1970, we have only added that many jobs 15 percent of the time. This has not been a one month flash in the pan, as we have now added factory jobs in 21 of the last 24 months.
