After a very intense written debate between Harry Moser, former president of GF AgieCharmilles and founder of the Reshoring Initiative, and Jagdish Bhagwati, Professor of Economics and Law, Columbia University, the vote was 54 percent "yes" and 46 percent "no."

New welding technique helps Acura integrate more aluminum in its cars
Motor Authority
Acura engineers have come up with a new welding technique that allows them to join ordinary steel components with lightweight aluminum pieces in a much simpler process than traditional methods. The welding technique relies on the use of a special adhesive agent that assures the complete filling of any gap between the two pieces, helping to prevent corrosion.

In Ohio and beyond, Obama sees model for manufacturing revival
A former furniture warehouse in a struggling Rust Belt city has emerged as a national model for innovation after President Barack Obama highlighted it in his State of the Union speech. Obama now aims to convince Congress to spend $1 billion to replicate the model nationwide. But it will be a tough sell to Republicans, who oppose government spending on industry and argue private capital will respond if there is real demand.

Exotic, useful metals are about to become cheap and plentiful
The Economist
Aluminum was once more costly than gold. How times change. And in aluminum's case, they changed because, in the late 1880s, Charles Hall and Paul Héroult worked out how to separate the stuff from its oxide using electricity rather than chemical reducing agents. Now, the founders of Metalysis, a small British firm, hope to do much the same with tantalum, titanium and a host of other recherché and expensive metallic elements including neodymium, tungsten and vanadium.

Watch the construction of a Dodge Viper in just 4 minutes
The New York Times
VideoBrief Despite its status as the Motor City, Detroit has only two automobile plants entirely within the city limits. One is Chrysler's Conner Avenue Assembly Plant, which reopened in December after being closed for more than three years during the automaker's bankruptcy. In January, the factory's first Viper — considered a "halo" vehicle, built to enhance a company's image rather than drive sales — rolled off the line.

Cleveland's manufacturing industry roaring back, expected to surpass national growth rate
The Plain Dealer
According to an analysis being released today by Team NEO, manufacturing output has returned to something near 1990 levels in Northeast Ohio and is ready to blow past historic markers. By the year 2020, the value of goods made, stamped, soldered or assembled here will have increased by nearly 40 percent, outpacing the national growth rate. That turnaround is powered by the region's steady if painful transition from traditional manufacturing, like steel-making, to the advanced manufacturing of precision parts, chemicals and polymers — products competitive in the global economy.
