From Autodesk, an incredible new technique for 3-D printing metal in midair
Fast Company
We can 3-D print myriad plastic goods, fabric for apparel, burritos, candy, and perhaps in the not-so-distant future, human organs. Metal — the material that forms the skeleton of any city, building or car — has been less accessible. Now, a collaboration between Dutch designer Joris Laarman and software company Autodesk has yielded something groundbreaking: an affordable technique for printing large metal structures, called MX3D-Metal.

Illinois, Michigan politicians tout manufacturing labs
The Associated Press via ABC News
Top politicians in Illinois joined local leaders in Michigan in trumpeting as a coup news that their states have landed a part in what they consider a revolutionary effort to boost manufacturing innovation, seeded by $140 million from federal taxpayers. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel recently announced Chicago's selection as eventual home to the Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute touted last month in President Barack Obama's State of the Union address. A second institute will be located in Canton, Mich., near Detroit.
Manufacturing index rebounds to fastest growth in nearly 4 years
The Motley Fool
The Markit Flash U.S. Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index jumped 5.6 percent to 56.7 for February, according to a Markit report released Feb. 20. According to Markit's metrics, this latest report marks the fastest manufacturing growth the U.S. has seen in nearly four years. The "flash" estimate is typically based on approximately 85-90 percent of total PMI survey responses each month and is designed to provide an accurate advance indication of the final PMI data. A reading above 50 denotes general growth, while below 50 signals contraction.
Sustainable manufacturing system to better consider the human component
Oregon State University via Phys.org
Engineers at Oregon State University have developed a new approach toward "sustainable manufacturing" that begins on the factory floor and tries to encompass the totality of manufacturing issues — including economic, environmental and social impacts. This approach, they say, builds on previous approaches that considered various facets of sustainability in a more individual manner. Past methods often worked backward from a finished product and rarely incorporated the complexity of human social concerns.

Haul monitor — Driven by passion
Custom Classic Trucks
One of Ryan Manson's favorite things about working on old trucks is when a certain aspect of the build presents an opportunity to learn something new. Perhaps it's the chance to learn about something that he's never worked with before, such as AN lines and fittings, or using a familiar technique with a new material, such as spraying water-borne paint. Whatever the case, it's always fun to learn something new and hone old skills further. This intercooler install story is a perfect example of a task that required me to pick up a new skill, welding aluminum.

Fabricator installs laser profiler to speed expansion
Industrial Laser Solutions
For nearly half a century, Grail Engineering has offered a fast turnaround fabrication service supported by machining, finishing and on-site installation. Historically, the company subcontracted laser cutting of a wide range of materials, from stainless and mild steels to aluminum. However, this function was brought in-house in 2012 following the purchase of a CO2 laser profiling machine from Bystronic UK and a CNC press brake from the same supplier. The $1.25 million investment, which included modifying the factory, led to the formation of a new division, Grail Laser, which supplies machined metal sheet and plate to Grail Engineering and also provides a subcontract laser cutting service.
