Southeastern Illinois College welding students swept the competition in the 10th annual David Nuckols Memorial Welding Competition on Friday, February 9 at Gray Wolf Industrial in Owensboro, Kentucky.
The combined scores of Pace Young and Hunter Chowning won top school over eight competing schools and Young won overall welder.

The Artesia (New Mexico) Public Schools Board of Education toured the new high school welding shop prior to the start of their recent regularly-scheduled board meeting. “You can’t ask for any more – you just don’t see this kind of shop in a high school setting,” Artesia High School agriculture, science and welding teacher Miles Mitchell told the board. “I don’t have a lot of absences; they’re here, they’re dressing out, they’re working because their vent time, their welding time, their skill time is a lot different than what they are used to. So it’s really neat to see.

There are about 13,600 job openings in Connecticut manufacturing right now, and even though the state has beefed up its community college training programs and increased its tax credits, there’s no way they will all be filled.
Connecticut is home to more than 4,000 manufacturers who employ 159,000 employees. That means that nearly one of every 10 Connecticut workers is employed in the manufacturing sector, but the demand for those skills continues to accelerate as many in the workforce are headed for retirement.

Students in the high school’s metals classes created the bike racks at the request of Charlie Collins, the dentist at Mountain View Dental Center in Anacortes.
