Country-of-origin labels could change consumer behavior, revive US manufacturing
Manufacturing & Technology News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A successful manufacturing entrepreneur from San Diego has proposed a means to reinvigorate U.S. manufacturing that has not yet been tried and holds promise. Alan Uke, founder of Underwater Kinetics, a company that manufactures high intensity lighting and other products, wants the government to require a detailed country-of-origin label on every product sold in America. The label would include sourcing information on all of the product's parts and components along with the trade balance the U.S. maintains with each of those countries. "I am trying to start a movement of American consumers" who do not currently have the information they need to determine if they want to buy a product that is made in a certain country, Uke says. Capital Area Career Center sees enrollment dip
The State Journal-Register    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
If everything goes right, Brody Correll will be making more than $400 per hour welding underwater pipes. The 17-year-old junior at Springfield High School in Springfield, Ill., spends his mornings in a booth at the Capital Area Career Center perfecting his welding beads. Lately, they're cracking a bit. It can be a tedious task learning to get the beads just right, but Correll said his welding class is the best — and most relaxing — part of his day. Correll is one of about two dozen students in Steven Hoff's welding class and one of 582 students attending the CACC this school year. The welding program is popular at the CACC, but the career and technical school's enrollment has seen a decline over the past decade. More

The family that welds together, stays together
Darien Patch    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Like many students, Dave Noorlag had a summer job while in high school. He drove a garbage truck for a sanitation company. When the company needed a welder to fix the trucks, Noorlag bought some equipment and began learning from experienced welders. "When I started, I just thought it was a way to make a little extra money," he said. "I learned the welding business, and it just took off from there." Noorlag now runs that business — Dave's Welding Service — out of his home in Darien, Ill. And it has provided him and his family with an unending variety of projects. More

US manufacturing, household spending probably rose
Bloomberg    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Manufacturing probably picked up in the U.S. in March, showing it is weathering a slowdown in global growth, economists said. The Institute for Supply Management's factory index climbed to 53 from 52.4 in February, according to a median estimate of 55 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News. Readings greater than 50 signal growth. Construction spending rose in February, other data may show. More

China manufacturing gain masks exporters' woes
Bloomberg    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A stronger reading for a Chinese manufacturing gauge failed to end predictions for policy loosening as analysts described the gain as seasonal and a separate survey showed exporters struggling. A Purchasing Managers' Index rose to a one-year high of 53.1 in March, China's logistics federation and the National Bureau of Statistics said. The gauge has a pattern of rising each March. In contrast, a PMI from HSBC Holdings Plc., and Markit Economics showed manufacturing contracting and export orders falling. More

Euro zone manufacturing malaise spreads to core
Reuters    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The euro zone's manufacturing sector shrank for an eighth month and at a faster pace in March, adding to signs the bloc is in recession as the downturn spread to core members France and Germany, a survey showed. Markit's Eurozone Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index dropped to 47.7 last month from 49.0 in February, in line with a preliminary reading. It has now been below the 50 mark that divides growth from contraction since August. Euro zone manufacturers suffered a miserable March. More

AWS conference on energy addresses new technology
AWS    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The demands for new and improved welding technology from the expanding energy markets are starting to pay off in the development of superior hybrid welding processes, new filler metals, and hosts of cladding procedures. Much of this new welding technology will be discussed at the AWS Energy II Welding Conference on June 12-13 in San Diego. The technologies are showing up in nuclear power plants, in coal-fired utilities, and especially in the new 1,700-mile-long pipelines designed to bring oil and natural gas to American markets. On the agenda will be talks on Lincoln Electric's new laser hot wire cladding process and the ICE process from ESAB in Sweden, which is intended for wind power fabrication. More

Bill inspired by college trustee concerns passes Illinois Senate
Elgin Courier News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It was one of John Dalton's first meetings as a member of the Elgin Community College Board of Trustees about a year ago. Representatives of several local unions had just toured the Illinois college's new welding lab, part of its Facilities Master Plan project, and they pointed out the welding booths had been made in Indonesia, Dalton said. They wondered why the college hadn't purchased booths made by American companies, he said. So did the new trustee. Trustees' hands were tied, he was told. The Illinois Community College Purchasing Act requires colleges to take the lowest bid. But they were "tied with string," Dalton said. That law could be changed. More
