Former steelworker hopes $2 billion chemical plant will revive Appalachia city
Reuters via MSNBC    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In George Vacheresse's lifetime, Appalachia has fallen from its prime when steel mills and coal mines anchored middle-class communities and offered hope there always would be enough work to go around. In this historically poor region nestled in the misty mountains of the eastern United States, most steel mills shut down long ago and the coal workforce has shrunk by 90 percent in the past 40 years. Now Vacheresse and other residents in Wheeling, Va., are counting on cheap natural gas from the massive reserves in the Marcellus and Utica shale rock formations to reinvigorate the region's economy. The market report illustrates how wind power has created a positive feedback loop where market certainty allows for states to generate affordable electricity from wind at record levels, which leads to one of America's fastest growing sources of Made-in-the-USA manufacturing jobs, which then allows the cost of wind to drop even further. The Record    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Do you have a dream? Take a cue from baby boomers who have made learning a valuable tool for achieving their professional and personal goals. It was 20 years before Mark Ventola, now a sergeant with the North Brunswick Police Department, fulfilled a promise to his parents to return to college. In 1979, he left Indiana State University to realize his dream to become a police officer. His studies were put aside until 1999, when he resumed his college career, earning a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Caldwell College, followed by a master's in human resources training and development from Seton Hall University. He plans to add a doctorate in education after he retires this year from a rewarding career with the force. More

PR Web via San Francisco Chronicle    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
M&M Welding and Fabricators was founded in 1972 in Gaithersburg, Md., by Russell "Muggs" Mullican. With her business management degree in hand, Carey Dove assumed control of the company from her father in 1990, although her initial love of the business can be traced to the many summers she spent as a day laborer on the M&M payroll. "I loved working in the field. There's no better way to learn the business. And no better way to get acquainted with the competent, loyal team that we've always been fortunate to have at M&M," Dove said. She has grown the company her father started nearly 40 years ago into one of the most successful woman-owned businesses in the country. More

Apple looking to build 'unibody' earbuds through ultrasonic bonding
AppleInsider    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
By using a process known as ultrasonic bonding, Apple could create new iPhone and iPod earbuds that would have a seamless, more aesthetically pleasing "unibody" appearance. Headsets and earbuds include a number of different components — such as cables, a jack, a microphone, and the headphones — all of which must be pieced together. The result, Apple believes, can be "abrupt and aesthetically displeasing." The company could resolve this with new headsets featuring a range of components that would "seamlessly integrate" with one another, as described in a new patent application discovered by AppleInsider.
