Are we producing too many STEM grads?
Public Radio International
Ever tell your mom that you wanted to be a rock star? An actor? A supermodel? You probably got a raised eyebrow (or a long lecture). But if you ever said you wanted to be a cancer researcher, a chemist, or a software engineer, it’s likely you landed on mom’s good side. Turns out, though, STEM jobs are harder to get than most of us think. And the widespread belief that they’re tickets to financial success may be wrong.

Imagination melds with metal to create art
Traverse City Record-Eagle
Annie and Dennis Hilton moved from Michigan to North Dakota in 2007 to follow their son, who took work in the booming oil fields. They returned to Michigan in 2011 and brought back a new creative outlet and business opportunity. Annie creates, designs and uses a computer-driven plasma cutter to rip them from thick sheet metal. Dennis adds his welding skills to the mix. The end result may be a foot-high female figure or a 7-foot-high garden trellis. "It’s very relaxing. I never get uptight doing this. It’s my quiet time," said Annie Hilton.

Mobile class sparks interest: Welding on Wheels lab has employers wondering if idea would work in Nebraska
Omaha World-Herald
A shortage of skilled welders prompted an Illinois company, First Institute Training & Management, to put one of its welding programs on wheels. The training trailer took to the road and made an appearance April 23 in Omaha. The institute was invited to Omaha by Accelerate Nebraska, a nonprofit that aims to ensure that high school and college students have the skills employers are looking for, and by the Avenue Scholars Foundation, which helps at-risk youths finish high school, get into college and find jobs.

7 things to know about STEM careers
CBS MoneyWatch
Occupations employing the largest percentages of Americans often don't pay well, and it's likely little surprise that fatter paychecks can be found in the seemingly harder-to-land jobs in science, technology engineering and math, the so-called STEM jobs. The more than 8.3 million STEM jobs counted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics in May 2014 represented 6.2 percent of total U.S. employment, roughly the same as those working as lesser-paid retail salespeople or cashiers.

Rethinking the manufacturing robot
MIT Technology Review
In a workshop at the Boston headquarters of Rethink Robotics, engineers are tending to a troop of eight bright red robots called Baxter. Each robot has a humanoid upper torso and a pair of friendly blue eyes on a small screen that track the robots’ two arms as the engineers move them. Off to the side of the room, senior product manager Brian Benoit is assembling a new robot called Sawyer — Baxter’s little brother. It has just one arm and is also smaller, faster, and more precise than Baxter. If things go as the company hopes, this new robot will find work alongside humans on many manufacturing production lines.
