Can manufacturing be reborn in the USA?
In These Times
In the short period since American multinationals departed en masse for China, the headwinds facing global manufacturers have changed significantly. China's once-rock-bottom labor costs have risen as factory wages in coastal areas climb and the national currency slowly appreciates in value. Conversely, the U.S. offers several overlooked advantages. One is an edge in automation, robotics and other productivity tools that reduce direct labor expenses, undercutting the overseas advantage of cheap labor.

9 materials that will change the future of manufacturing
Scientific American
The future of manufacturing depends on a number of technological breakthroughs in robotics, sensors and high-performance computing, to name a few. But nothing will impact how things are made, and what they are capable of, more than the materials manufacturers use to make those things. Will Southern manufacturing rise again?
Aiken Standard (commentary)
The American economy, increasingly dependent on the service and financial sectors, still requires industry and the value-added creation of wealth to sustain itself. No economy can survive by taking in each other's laundry, and the rest of the world won't trade physical goods for dollars forever. Yet the question remains: is the American industrial base too far gone to be saved?
