General Motors sales in China hit record high in April
IndustryWeek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
General Motors Co. said it saw record sales in China in April, despite a broader slowdown in the world's biggest car market. GM sold 227,217 vehicles in April, up 11.7 percent from the same month last year, according to the automaker. GM also registered a sales record for the month of March. For the first four months of the year, GM's China sales rose 9.4 percent year-on-year to 972,369 units. GM China Group President Kevin Wale said sales will top 1 million vehicles in May, the earliest they have reached that landmark figure in China. More

Manufacturing still vital, has future
The Poughkeepsie Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Local manufacturers are confronted with challenges but are coping and remain a key part of the Duchess County, N.Y., economy, panelists said at a recent breakfast sponsored by the Dutchess County Economic Development Corp. Higher costs in New York than some competitors face is one hurdle. Soft domestic demand is another. And finding the right personnel to fill vacancies is a challenge for some. Three local manufacturers said they each have developed a significant export business as part of their strategies. More

After decades of outsourcing, manufacturing jobs coming home to US
GlobalPost    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Beginning in the 1970s America's high-paying manufacturing jobs in the steel, textile, electronics and automotive industries relocated first south to Latin America and then east to Asia. In what some dubbed "a global race to the bottom," labor rights have dwindled all along the way and the American middle class, long sustained by those manufacturing jobs, finds itself gutted. Now, the fate of what is left of the American middle class is at the center of a presidential election and forcing a reexamination of the impact of the global decline of labor rights. But after years of pain for America's manufacturing sector and its workers, some economists and analysts are wondering if the tide may be turning. More

Manufacturing looks to be bright spot in April jobs
Invester's Business Daily    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The April employment report may be another lackluster showing, but don't blame manufacturers, with recent surveys showing they're upbeat on jobs. Initial jobless claims dropped by 27,000 to 365,000, but the four-week average climbed by 750 to 383,500, the Labor Department said. An index on service-sector employment slipped in April, ISM said. ADP said private-sector payrolls increased by 119,000 in April. Several business surveys indicate hiring at manufacturers could pick up. More

Assembly Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Opened in August 2011 to international acclaim, the new Great Wall Motors' automotive plant in Tianjin, China, produces 250,000 vehicles per year. By 2015, when other phases of the factory are completed, GWM hopes to produce 800,000 units annually. Several vehicle models are made at the plant, which is considered the most technically advanced automotive factory in China. One model is the Haval SUV. One of the factory's most highly publicized, and productive, manufacturing lines is the automated welding line. Developed by ABB Robotics, this turnkey welding line gives GWM the flexibility to weld different car models as needed. More

Speed dating for the skilled trades crowd
TheRecord    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The whistle blew every five minutes, sending another cluster of teens off to the next table for a fresh sales pitch about another skilled trade. Welders, technicians, chefs and mechanics were set up in a corner of a packed trade exhibition recently at RIM Park in Waterloo, Ontario, where 30,000 shuffling teens were seeking career inspiration among whining power tools and sparkling technology. A new kind of hard-sell was under way. In a twist on speed-dating, the handful of skilled trades workers had all of five minutes to make small groups of students fall in love with their trades. More

Men, women still slow to cross into nontraditional careers
Green Bay Press Gazette    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When Breana Cleven dons a cap and gown next week to accept a certificate in welding from Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, she'll be part of a minority and majority. Women have outnumbered men at local colleges for more than a generation, and their ranks are growing. But educators say certain areas of study continue to be dominated by women or men. Women, for example, slowly are gravitating to fields typically favored by men, including welding, science or engineering. Cleven will be one of the 65 percent or so of female graduates, but just one of two women graduating with a welding certificate. More

5 ways to introduce flexible work schedules into manufacturing operations
IndustryWeek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Facebook senior executive Sheryl Sandberg recently made headlines for her long-term commitment to 40-hour workweeks. Each day, she leaves the office at 5:30 p.m. in order to be home at night with her children. Is this really so radical an idea that it merits international media coverage? Have North American companies become such sweatshops that the traditional workweek is now considered minimum fare? Coverage of Sandberg's 'confession,' as it were, would suggest the answer is yes, but there also is more to the story. New research shows that employers are slowly backing off of overtime demands. Alabama auto plants now regional job hubs
The Associated Press via The Anniston Star    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
An auto supplier changed Curtis Moss' life. A 2005 graduate of Wellborn High School in Anniston, Ala., Moss earned money painting cabinets before he applied for a job at Atlantic Tool and Die Alabama — a metal stamping and welding auto supplier in Anniston. Moss is one of 130 people employed at Atlantic Tool and Die, which came to Anniston in 2003 solely to manufacture metal brackets for the Honda automotive assembly plant in Lincoln, Ala. Though several major auto manufacturers like Honda have located in Alabama and hired many people, many more suppliers like Atlantic Tool and Die have also moved to the state, creating or supporting thousands of jobs and stimulating the overall economy. Welding sparked artist's imagination
Tallahassee Democrat    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Sculptor Mark Dickson credits a great deal of his artistic inspiration to his paternal grandmother. "She was very involved in the Oakland Museum as a volunteer and docent, in California, where I grew up," he explains. "She also had a collection of abstract modern art, which I was exposed to from a really young age. She was sharp and smart. She'd tell us about the abstract artwork, and ask us what we saw and how we felt about it." But Dickson never considered art as a career for himself. He believed that in order to be an artist, you had to be able to paint and draw, neither of which were his strengths. He didn't discover welding and steel sculpture until he was almost 30. More

Skilled trades in demand as mining industry booms
The Sudbury Star    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Jeff Lafortune teaches in the civil and mining engineering technologist program at College Boreal in Sudbury, Ontario, where he graduated 15 years ago. In that decade and a half, he's seen a tremendous demand build for skilled mining employees. College Boreal has run a campaign this year throughout the North, explaining to young people the "dividends" of choosing a career in trades, and especially mining. It's already starting to pay off with higher enrollment, said Lafortune. The Mining Industry Human Resource Council is predicting there will be a shortage of 110,000 skilled workers in less than 10 years. More

Martinez agrees to share sales tax dollars to keep industrial supplier in California town
Contra Costa Times via San Jose Mercury News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Unwilling to risk losing a business that moves millions of dollars' worth of merchandise every year, Martinez, Calif., city leaders have agreed to give some of the resulting sales tax revenue back to the company. Supplies & Solutions, which sells a wide range of industrial products including tools, safety gear and welding supplies, moved its headquarters to Martinez in 2009. In the current fiscal year, the company has contributed about $700,000 in sales tax revenue to Martinez — 20 percent of the city's total, according to City Manager Phil Vince. More
