The future of manufacturing: Sensors, 3-D printers, and
data science

Fast Company
A new study from consulting giant McKinsey says factories are the next fertile ground for the Internet of Things. The report, called "Industry 4.0: How to Navigate a Changing Industrial Landscape," also says something intuitive: Over the next 10 years, factories and manufacturing facilities will worry less about buying new equipment and more about outfitting their spaces with an array of high-tech sensors and routers.

Record number of manufacturing jobs returning to America
Made in the U.S.A. is hot again, and the number of manufacturing jobs that are returning to the U.S. — or coming to the U.S. for the first time — from overseas has hit a record level. Sixty thousand manufacturing jobs were added in the U.S. in 2014, versus 12,000 in 2003, either through so-called reshoring, in which American companies bring jobs back to the U.S., or foreign direct investment, in which foreign companies move production to the U.S., according to a study from the Reshoring Initiative. In contrast, as many as 50,000 jobs were "offshored" last year, a decline from about 150,000 in 2003.

Louisiana artist forges career with welding work
The Daily Reveille
It’s no secret how hot it can get in Louisiana. In an environment so unforgiving to the cold-natured, the last profession, one would think to pursue is working with torch and steel in a boiling workshop every day. Artist Nathan Logsdon doesn’t let the heat get to him, even when he’s busy building intricate scrollwork and welding large metal sculptures. His artistic fabrication company, The Metalsmith, has existed in Baton Rouge for 13 years. Logsdon has been working with metal for 22 years, having an interest in fabrication since a young age.

Welding requires a number of precautions
New Hampshire Union Leader
Ray Magliozzi of "Car Talk" responds to a reader’s question about MIG welding a cab frame, writing, "I’m less worried about your electrical system than I am about your retinas, Ray. MIG welding is dangerously bright, and without proper eye protection, you could blind yourself. After that, fixing the holes in the dashboard would drop down on your priority list because (A) you’d no longer be able to see them, so they wouldn’t bother you as much, and (B) you would have great difficulty securing a driver’s license."
