Women in welding a focus on new trailer tour
AWS (blog)
The American Welding Society is producing a short video that will debut on the Careers in Welding Trailer this summer. It's focus: women in welding. With Nancy Cole presiding over the activities of the American Welding Society this year and this being only the second time a woman has been president of AWS the theme of "women in welding" seemed to be an important and appropriate one.
Your future will be manufactured on a 3-D printer
Bloomberg
Consider the Urbee 2, a car being produced by Kor Ecologic using a 3-D printer. When completed, it will weigh some 1,200 pounds. Made with about 40 pieces of thermoplastic, it will be resilient, aerodynamic and mind-bogglingly efficient. Its designers can employ unorthodox shapes and materials to maximize efficiency, mold the lightweight plastic with precision to strengthen vulnerable areas, and fit most pieces together without joints or welding. In effect, they're compressing much of an automobile assembly line into a printing device.

This award-winning welding helmet has a HEPA filter
Popular Science
Within his first 30 minutes on the job at an aluminum factory in 1999, metalworker Michael Buckman inhaled so many noxious fumes he was sick with bronchitis for three days. As he recovered, Buckman wondered whether a commercial welding helmet could have filtered his breathing air. "I didn't see anything out there like what I was thinking about," he says. So he set out to build the WindMaker: a helmet that can prevent lung damage.
Closing the manufacturing skills gap
IndustryWeek
At Air Products & Chemicals Inc., about 150 skilled-labor jobs are open and unfilled at any given time in the United States. The positions run the gamut from welders and instrument electrical technicians who work with sophisticated controls to diesel mechanics, pipe fitters and mechanical engineering technicians. Those unfilled positions represent 38 percent of the roughly 400 skilled-worker positions Air Products attempts to hire each year for its U.S. workforce.
GE uses 3-D printing to manufacture jet engine
International Business Times
General Electric's aviation division may provide the first big test of using 3-D printing to mass-produce high-performance products. The world's largest supplier of jet engines announced that it would start manufacturing a complex fuel nozzle with "additive manufacturing," instead of traditional casting and welding.

Amid Navy Yard's ruins, space for a comeback in manufacturing
The New York Times
Across the partition from the roboticist who was making coffee tables with magnetized cubes, an artist was boxing up woodcuts that, when held to the ear, sounded like a forest. Beyond him, a muscular man in a T-shirt tinkered with his design for a motorcycle. This eclectic mix of entrepreneurs did not in any way resemble workers in a traditional factory, but their landlords and city officials hope they represent the seedlings of a rebirth of manufacturing in New York City.
Gold solder used to laser-weld ruptured intestines
Gizmag
Stitches and staples may be on their way to becoming a thing of the past, thanks to a developing technology known as laser tissue welding. Now, a new gold-based solder has been created, that could make tissue welds in regions such as the intestines much stronger and more reliable.

What are the advantages of robot welding over manual welding?
RobotWorx
There are several advantages to automating a factory with welding robotics, including faster, consistent cycle times, no break in production and better weld quality. Robotic weld cells work productively because they can work without breaks or days off. A robot welder is more consistent and thorough and can move from one weld to the next quickly, speeding up the entire process.

Marinette Marine exec: Skills gap could decimate Wisconsin manufacturing
The Greater Milwaukee Business Journal
Manufacturing executives have issued plenty of dire warnings about the potential impact of the skills gap on the industry, but Steven Baue of Marinette Marine Corp. delivered probably the most apocalyptic prediction we've heard yet. "Manufacturing will cease to exist [in Wisconsin] if we can't figure out this formula," said Baue, vice president of human resources for the shipbuilder.

Hyundai Heavy develops mini welding robot for shipbuilding
MarineLink.com
Hyundai Heavy Industries has developed mini welding robots for building ships. The compact design of the welding machine, measuring 50 cm by 30 cm by 15 cm when retracted its welding arm, can operate in confined areas inaccessible to human welders. The robots' six joints enable the machine to carry out almost all types of welding work at a similar speed usually done by a welder.
