GE engineers used 3-D printer to build jet engine
United Press International
Engineers at General Electric recently used a 3-D printer to build a jet engine, employing a technique called additive manufacturing. Despite the machine's compact size, the jet engine roared to an impressive 33,000 rotations per minute. Additive manufacturing is the process of stacking thin 2-D layers of material to create 3-D objects. Traditional manufacturing sees objects carved from larger chunks of material.

Trade group: US manufacturing to grow less than expected
The outlook for manufacturing in 2015 is still optimistic but less so than initially predicted because of a collapse in oil and natural gas prices, reduced growth from a strong dollar, excess inventory and a late 2014 surge in consumers’ spending that depleted their fuel savings, a leading manufacturing economist said recently.

New high-volume joining process expands use of aluminum in autos
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory via
Researchers have demonstrated a new process for the expanded use of lightweight aluminum in cars and trucks at the speed, scale, quality and consistency required by the auto industry. The process reduces production time and costs while yielding strong and lightweight parts, for example delivering a car door that is 62 percent lighter and 25 percent cheaper than that produced with today's manufacturing methods.

Laser cleaning prior to laser welding of aluminum alloys
Industrial Laser Solutions
Aluminum alloys are typically used in the automotive, aerospace and sport industries due to their light weight, ease of forming/machining, and acceptable strength properties. Joining aluminum alloy panels and sheets is typically realized by mechanical riveting, arc welding, brazing, friction-stir welding, laser welding and hybrid laser/arc welding. Laser welding can be very fast and generates low thermal distortions. However, laser welding of the alloys often results in significant amount of porosity, thus very low joint strengths — typically 50–75 percent that of the parent material.
