Study: Cleveland's job drought will soon be history
The Cleveland Plain Dealer
A growing medical industry, combined with manufacturing might, is expected to create tens of thousands of jobs in Northeast Ohio over the next decade. Coupled with a coming retirement wave, the region may be facing an actual labor shortage in a few years and certainly a skills gap, according to a study. Many manufacturers are faced with an older workforce and a lack of young workers skilled at trades like welding, machining, pipe fitting and metal fabrication.

Why 3-D printing is overhyped — I should know, I do it for a living
Everyone's now aware of 3-D printing — they've read about it in the papers, on blogs or seen it on TV. The mentality now seems to be that, in the future, we'll be able to download our products or make them ourselves with CAD programs, apps and 3-D scanners, then just print them out, either at home, or in localized print shops. Which, in turn, will supposedly decentralize manufacturing and bring it back to the West. But 3-D printing is severely overhyped — and Nick Allen, the founder of 3-D printing company 3-D Print UK, should know because it's what he does for a living.

15 sectors, comprising nearly 80 percent of U.S. manufacturing output, produced less in 2009 than in 2000
The Huffington Post
Talk of a manufacturing revival is in the air. America has, in fact, gained a quarter-million industrial jobs since the start of 2010. Unfortunately, this is less than 15 percent of the number lost during the recession. Furthermore, after this teasing uptick, U.S. manufacturing output seems to be stalling again. To get past the slew of analysis out there claiming everything is fine, it is crucial to understand why the usually quoted statistics that seem to show that American manufacturing is healthy are wrong.

2 metals enter, 1 leaves: The miracle of friction stir welding
Car and Driver
The metal-joining technique was developed in 1991 by The Welding Institute, an industrial research center near Cambridge, England. In the mid-1990s, two Scandinavian aluminum-extrusion companies became the first to use the technique commercially. Since then, it has been widely adopted by the aerospace industry and has slowly trickled into the automotive realm.

Manufacturing interest at an early age
Crain's Cleveland Business
High schools and manufacturing are starting to mix again. Exposing high school students to manufacturing — and welding in particular — is critical, said Christopher L. Mapes, president and CEO of Lincoln Electric. Mapes said there is a shortage of welders, and that training alone won't solve the problem. It's important to get people interested in welding.

Study of the spray to globular transition in gas metal arc welding
Journal of Physics via IOPscience
The gas metal arc welding process is strongly influenced by the composition of the shielding gas. In particular, addition of CO2 increases the threshold current for the transition from unstable globular to more stable spray transfer mode. We report on the diagnostics — using optical emission spectroscopy — of a GMAW plasma in pure argon and in mixtures of argon, CO2 and N2 while operated in spray and globular transfer modes.

Is US manufacturing making a comeback — or is it just hype?
The Washington Post
U.S. firms that have long operated abroad are announcing that they're shifting some manufacturing operations back to the United States. It's easy to be skeptical. So far, the effect on jobs has been modest. Yet the optimists counter that the logic of a manufacturing comeback remains compelling.
