Bet on US manufacturing for a rebound
Reuters    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
If you were betting on a big rebound for any one sector this year, you probably would have put your money on banking instead of manufacturing. The more glamorous rebound story has been banking and the financial services sector. U.S. manufacturing, in contrast, is a warts-and-all comeback kid story that doesn't get much attention. Many of the industries left for dead in the wake of the Great Recession have undergone massive restructuring and are much more productive than they were five years ago. Industrial production posted its fastest growth in a year in April, according to the Federal Reserve. Provided the U.S. doesn't slip back into recession, manufacturing could be the long-term investment that offers some durable profits over the next few years. More

US job growth seen accelerating in 2012, 2013
Reuters via CNBC    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The U.S. labor market will strengthen significantly next year, with monthly job growth expected to average 200,000, according to a new survey. The National Association for Business Economics forecast the unemployment rate at 7.5 percent by the end of 2013. The survey of 54 economists painted a fairly upbeat picture of the labor market, which has slowed in recent months after job creation surged early in the year. "Economists continue to see things pick up, even if it's just slightly from pretty low levels," said Shawn DuBravac, NABE outlook survey and chief economist at the Consumers Electronics Association. Friction stir welding brings together reliability, affordability for space launch system    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
NASA's next heavy-lift launch vehicle, the Space Launch System, is moving further in development faster thanks to proven advanced technologies like friction stir welding. Friction stir welding uses frictional heating combined with forging pressure to produce high-strength bonds virtually free of defects. The welding process transforms metals from a solid state into a "plastic-like" state, and uses a rotating pin tool to soften, stir and forge a bond between two metal plates to form a uniform welded joint — a vital requirement of next-generation space hardware. Economic preview: Manufacturing, housing probably improved
Bloomberg    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Manufacturers probably received more orders in April and home sales rose, a sign that the U.S. expansion is still on track, economists said before reports this week. Factory bookings for long-lasting goods rose 0.3 percent last month after falling 3.9 percent in March, according to the median forecasts of 61 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News before a May 24 Commerce Department report. Other figures may show purchases of existing and new houses also climbed. More

Students welding their way toward work
The Reporter    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Hands are dirty, sparks are flying, the noise is loud and temperatures of machines are in the hundreds as you enter the North Montco Technical Career Center welding and fabrication technology classroom in Towamencin in Kulpsville, Pa. There are 28 eager students who work day in and day out at their stations, welding new creations, excelling in their craft. As welding helmets go up, you will see the faces of 24 male students. However, it is hard to miss as the other helmets are removed. Long strands of girls' hair is released from dark maska. "I think it's pretty cool when I tell someone that I like to weld," said Souderton Area High School senior Casey Stanley, 18, of Telford. "Most people think it is a man's job but that is not the case anymore." More

Senior class says farewell by welding a pickup to their school    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A teacher always feels rewarded by the work of particularly apt students. Welding was an addition to the curriculum at Liberty Bell High School in the town of Winthrop, Wash., this year and the Class of 2012 decided to show what they learned — by splitting an old pickup down the middle, then welding it back together around a column in front of the school. Good-humored school officials allowed the senior prank to stand for a day before having the students dismantle it. If only the pickup had belonged to the principal, it would have been an epic, but classic, gag. More

New welding technique pioneered by NASA brings hundreds of experts to Huntsville, Ala.
The Huntsville Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Twenty years ago, it was a revolutionary idea for welding metal together. Ten years later, it was critical technology for America's space shuttle. Today, the technology called "friction stir welding" is widely used to join aluminum alloy components — particularly in the transportation field where alloys save weight and weight costs money. "Anything light that travels — trains, boats, cars, planes," said Jonathan Martin of The Welding Institute of Cambridge, England. Martin is organizer of an international friction stir welding conference that opened May 15 in Huntsville, Ala. More

Virtual reality goes to school
The New York Times via Pittsburgh Post-Gazette    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The blistering pace of advances in automotive technology may be confusing to consumers, but it seems to be creating a strong employment outlook for those who fix cars. According to a forecast by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, from 2010 to 2020 the work force will add positions for 124,800 service technicians and mechanics, 32,700 automotive body and glass repairers and 13,800 painting and coating workers. While that growth rate is not explosive, the Labor Department foresees steady employment for those with training and certification. But the rapid-fire technology developments also are widening the skills gap. More

Workers in McAllen, Texas, earn an average of roughly $35,000 per year, while those in Silicon Valley earn an average of more than four times that. The 10 cities with the highest-paid manufacturing jobs were reviewed by 24/7 Wall St. More

US solar tariffs on Chinese cells may boost prices
Bloomberg    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The U.S. has imposed tariffs of as much as 250 percent on Chinese-made solar cells to aid domestic manufacturers beset by foreign competition, though critics said the decision may end up raising prices and hurting the U.S. renewable energy industry. The U.S. Commerce Department ruled that Chinese manufacturers sold cells in the U.S. at prices below the cost of production and announced preliminary anti-dumping duties ranging from 31 percent to 250 percent, depending on the manufacturer. China criticized the action, saying the U.S. is hurting itself and cooperation between the world's two largest economies. More

Training program adds revenues, jobs
Hartford Business Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Lynn Welding of Newington, Conn., grew its sales 44 percent since November 2010. Over the same time, the company increased its workforce by 33 percent. The difference? The company's workers received training with $34,000 in grants from the state and U.S. Department of Labor. That training qualified Lynn Welding for more precision welding work, which it quickly received. "I can't say it is all because of the state program, but it is a major part of it," said Darius Kania, vice president of Lynn Welding. Lynn was one of a handful of companies in Connecticut that took advantage of a U.S. Department of Labor $1.3 million grant to fund a pilot study for its Early Warning Demonstration Program. The money, awarded to the state at the start of the year, was gobbled up in four months. More
