How fab shops can pay for capital equipment purchase with tax savings
The Fabricator
The R&D tax credit is a tool that many manufacturers and metal fabricators might have heard about but, frankly, rarely use. The thinking is logical: “We don’t have an R&D department.” But that thinking is flawed. The tax credit, also known as the Research and Experimentation tax credit in some circles, acknowledges that companies involved in the development, design, or improvement of products, processes, formulas, or software are worthy of deducting the expenses associated with these activities in their tax returns.

A salute to metal fabricators and all those who work hard for a living
The Fabricator
Every time I get to visit a metal fabricating company, I’m doing penance for an immature act committed by a self-absorbed high school student more than 35 year ago. It doesn’t change the past, but it makes me feel a little bit better each time I walk onto a shop floor.

Steel prices are back on a downward trend
The Fabricator
I wrote last month that steel prices had stalled and that a bevy of indicators were suggesting that a fall might be around the corner.
I was cautious then not to make too much of a couple of weeks of SMU survey data. There is no reason to be cautious any longer. The warning signals we saw in April are now entrenched trends.
Pick your indicator: Steel prices, lead times, or mill negotiations. All point to lower prices in the weeks ahead.
