Biggest welding machine ever arrives at Pratt & Whitney
The world’s largest welding machine arrived in Middletown, Connecticut, recently. The machine rolled into the Pratt and Whitney parking lot early around midnight. It arrived in style from Indiana on a 200-foot-long flatbed truck.

Building a skilled labor workforce

In an effort to continue supplying the workforce in southwest Louisiana with skilled labor, a pilot program created by Sasol and managed by the Community Foundation of Southwest Louisiana recently awarded 50 scholarships to people looking for a career path in the region’s ongoing industrial expansion. The 50 workforce resource guide scholarships will be used at local training institutions like ABC and Sowela Technical Community College. Of the 50 scholarships, 29 went to people who either have lived or are living in Westlake or Mossville.

Washington state welding students headed to national competition

Becoming state champions wasn’t what anyone expected of the Battle Ground, Washington, welding students, especially the students themselves. When Tod Garred, welding instructor at Battle Ground High School, asked his class if anyone would like to enter a welding competition, he expected the same lack of interest he’d had in previous years. But "these kids were willing to give it a shot," said Garred.

America’s business and labor leaders agree: President Obama and Congress can do more to modernize the permitting process for infrastructure projects — airports, factories, power plants and pipelines — which at the moment is burdensome, slow and inconsistent. Gaining approval to build a new bridge or factory typically involves review by multiple federal agencies — such as the Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Forest Service, the Interior Department, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Bureau of Land Management — with overlapping jurisdictions and no real deadlines.

Manufacturing index shows decline in southeastern Wisconsin

An index that measures manufacturing growth in southeastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois fell into negative territory again this month, according to a survey of companies released May 29. The seasonally adjusted purchasing managers index for Wisconsin and northern Illinois was 47.70, down from 48.08 in April and 53.25 in March, noted Marquette University's Center for Supply Chain Management and the Milwaukee-area chapter of the Institute of Supply Chain Management, the organizations that compile the monthly data.

Three years ago, John Bonislawski was building components for military defense projects in his basement. A veteran of the electronics manufacturing industry and the United States Army, Bonislawski had taken a leap of faith.
