The Plain Dealer    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The shale gas boom hitting Ohio, Pennsylvania and several other states could provide a major advantage to manufacturers in the United States — cheap energy that could significantly cut the costs to produce goods here, a group of economists said. "By 2025, the manufacturing sector alone could save $11.5 billion in energy costs," Robert McCutcheon, an economist with consulting group PwC, said at a manufacturing summit hosted by the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. C-TEC grad takes hands-on approach
The Newark Advocate    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Looking back on his freshman year of high school, Newark, Ohio, native Matt Arnott describes himself as a bit of a loner. "I didn't talk to people," he said. "I wasn't really outgoing." But four years later, it's difficult to imagine Matt as anything but a leader, said Steve Strelecky, the welding and sheet metal layout instructor at the Career and Technology Education Centers of Licking County, Ohio. "He leads by example, but when it's needed, he'll step up and say what needs to be said," Strelecky said. "He's an outstanding kid." More

To always be prepared, Boy Scouts start welding
Reuters    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It's not quite fly fishing or hiking, but welding is the latest merit badge Boy Scouts can earn — part of a full-court press to attract fresh talent to the critical occupation. More than 140,000 new welders will be needed by 2019 to replace retirees and meet rising demand from natural gas drillers, steel producers, automakers and more, according to the American Welding Society. The group helped the Boy Scouts of America award its first welding merit badge in March, hoping to offset waning interest in welding due to a cultural focus on four-year liberal arts degrees at the expense of community colleges and trade schools, industry experts say. Parts firm to occupy Bluebird bus plant in LaFayette, Ga.
Chattanooga Times Free Press    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Phillips Bros. Machine Co. hasn't gotten much media attention in its 37 years. The only coverage that Plant Manager Michael Phillips can remember was when a TV news crew stopped by to interview an employee who had undergone gastric bypass surgery. A higher profile is likely, as the family-owned heavy equipment parts manufacturer is leaving its roughly 50,000 square feet of space in Rossville, Ga., and spending some $3 million to buy the 280,000 square foot former Bluebird school bus manufacturing plant in LaFayette, Ga.
