Weld repairs occur across nearly all industries and types of alloys. Whether it is performed immediately after joint completion, after hydrostatic testing & NDE or after the failure of an in-service component, successful repair welding should take into account code compliance, Quality Assurance, Fitness-for-Service and economic considerations. Each weld pass adds another chapter in the thermal and mechanical history of the component, affecting its mechanical and/or corrosion resistance properties. Accurately planning, designing and executing the repair are critical to make the component suitable for continued service. In addition to general industry & tribal knowledge, many guidelines exist within API, ASME, NBIC and AWS standards for executing a successful weld repair process.
This conference will provide case studies, discuss the application of repair codes / guidelines, and better connect the welding industry from fabricators, material suppliers and operators to discuss the importance and complexity of repair welds.

Offshore wind turbines built according to current standards may not be able to withstand the powerful gusts of a Category 5 hurricane, creating potential risk for any such turbines built in hurricane-prone areas, new University of Colorado Boulder-led research shows.
The study, which was conducted in collaboration with the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado and the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colorado, highlights the limitations of current turbine design and could provide guidance for manufacturers and engineers looking to build more hurricane-resilient turbines in the future.

When you’re shopping for an anniversary bracelet, or a broach for a special occasion, the last thing you probably think of is welding (unless you’re thinking of how much welding you’ll have to do to pay for each stunning piece!). Yet, jewelers and welders have more in common than you might realize. After all, both professions use heat to bend and join metals. This similarity hasn’t gone unnoticed for many jewelers. In fact, laser welding is quickly becoming a staple for jewelry repair and design due to its precise heat transfer. This trend is reflected in today’s classrooms, where teachers are turning to laser welding techniques and equipment to better prepare the next generation of jewelry craftsmen.

Any good MIG welder knows that they’re only as good as the equipment that they use. But that equipment is only good so long as it’s maintained properly. That’s why it’s so important to follow the correct procedures to care for it. Not taking these simple actions can result in equipment that functions poorly, creates substandard welds, or breaks down and requires replacement. Protect your investment by maintaining your equipment!

All oxyfuel cutting tips have several things in common. They all have a center-cutting oxygen hole, with openings around the center hole for the preheat flames. These openings may be holes or splines. Cutting tips are constructed of various metallic alloys by numerous manufacturers, but they are all designed to cut metal. So how does one know how to choose the best tip for the job? When choosing a cutting tip, one needs to know three basic things.

AWS D1.6, Structural Welding Code — Stainless Steel has received a revision for 2017.
This code is the product of a pool of experts arriving at a consensus position, in keeping with the American National Standard Institute’s requirements. This code covers the requirements for welding stainless steel components other than pressure vessels or pressure piping. For many years, fabrications involving structural stainless steel welding used AWS D1.1/D1.1M, Structural Welding Code — Steel, to provide the requirements for quality construction. However, as the AWS D1.1 document is written for the carbon and low-alloy steels commonly encountered in structural fabrication, it does not explicitly address the unique requirements of stainless steels.

Skylar Huggett always knew she wanted something more. She didn’t know exactly what that meant, but she did know it meant something different than waiting tables.
We all have a different Eureka! moment. For some it’s travelling to a new place. For others it’s reading about something they’ve never known about. For Huggett it was a documentary, of all things.
While in Savannah, Georgia, waiting tables and sort of going through the motions of life, Huggett caught part of a documentary on welding. That’s all it took to get her mind going. I guess you could say it was love at first spark.

Weld purging is the act of removing oxygen from the vicinity of a weld before, during and after welding metals such as stainless steel, titanium, zirconium and nickel alloys.
Without weld purging, the weld would be left oxidised and discoloured, which could then lead to loss of corrosion resistance and metallurgical imperfections.
