Donald Burton’s expectations were far exceeded at Champion High School on June 9 when he came to pick up a mobile hunting blind that he’d commissioned welding students to build for use by disabled veterans.
Rather than modifying the small flatbed trailer left by Burton in January, Dorman Vick’s class of award-winning welders used donated materials to create — from scratch — a flashy blind/trailer combo.

Medical microfluidics demand high specifications, precision, cleanliness and a high quality joining method. The laser welding of thermoplastics is well established and goes back to approximately 2000. The technology joins together a laser-transparent and a laser-absorbent material. The laser beam passes right through the upper joining partner to hit the welding zone where it is absorbed by the lower joining partner. The lower part of the weld seam is heated up until it melts.

When welding titanium using the GTAW/TIG process, the gas shield from the welding torch needs extending for protection from oxidation and for productivity. Although welders will use a larger than normal gas cup to provide a big surface area of protection, this still limits the speed at which they can move the welding torch.

According to the American Welding Society, the welding industry will face a shortage of more than 400,000 professionals by 2025, largely due to the number of older, skilled workers retiring. Central Arizona College’s welding program is helping to train the next generation of welders. Practical training coupled with advanced technology helps graduates to succeed in this career field. Students learn welding techniques along with design and fabrication skills through competency-based educational methods that allow them to consistently progress in their skill level.

A welding class at East Career and Technical Academy in Las Vegas aims to create prospective job opportunities in the first summer edition of What's Cool at School. "The other part of this program is to learn how to work," said instructor Marco Centeno. "This place is treated like a workplace, and I'm their boss, and they have to stay on task." "He doesn't treat us like students. He calls us his workers, so we're on the clock right now. Time is money," said senior Vanessa Rodriguez.

The recent employment report cast a pall over the economic outlook. Headline jobs growth of just 38,000 was much weaker than expected and left us all wondering whether the Federal Reserve would wait longer to raise interest rates. The manufacturing sector shed 10,000 jobs, and has shown job losses in three of the past four months. Year-over-year growth in manufacturing employment has been negative for three months in a row, and it would appear that whatever manufacturing employment renaissance occurred in the years immediately following the Great Recession is over.

Chances are, if you live in Bloomington, Indiana, you’ve touched Josh Smith’s work. In the art world, the No. 1 rule for consumers may be "look, don’t touch." But, for nearly five years, Smith’s work has not only begged to be touched, it has insisted that people throughout the city lean, sit and rely on his welding and fabrication skills. Smith’s Clutch Fabrication may have started in one-half of a two-car garage, but next month, it will move into a new facility that’s triple the size of the current workshop.

Cecilia Vigil of Arizona Western College writes, "I love science — I love everything about it. When I am teaching biology, environmental science, or animal science, I explain to my students that everything they learn in life applies to science. I give them examples of how learning to sew helped me with suturing while in veterinary school, and learning carpentry with my father assisted in my mastering orthopedics.
This is why when teaching anatomy and physiology, many students who are bilingual find their knowledge of Spanish assists them with understanding Latin-based terms."
