Oil and gas boom could make US world's biggest producer
IndustryWeek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The United States is seeing a dramatic surge in oil and gas production and could overtake the world's biggest producers — Russia and Saudi Arabia — in another decade, a U.S. official said. "Some of the numbers are eye-popping," Daniel Sullivan, commissioner in Alaska's Department of Natural Resources, told a panel of experts at the International Economic Forum of the Americas in Montreal. In the last quarter, the United States produced 6 million barrels of conventional and unconventional oil a day, he said, adding: "We haven't done that in 15 years." More

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Career opportunities in the skilled trades are strong, but one of northern Wisconsin's largest employers hasn't been able to recruit more than a handful of recent high school graduates for some of the best-paying jobs in the region. Marinette Marine Corp. said it is holding open 40 positions in its training program for welders and other shipyard jobs, hoping to attract recent high school graduates from the Marinette, Wis., and Menominee, Mich., area. The company has reached out to nine schools to find job candidates, but so far only seven recent graduates have applied for the training, which begins in July. More

Small manufacturers spending more on big machines may be good for broader economy
The Associated Press via The Washington Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Small businesses that make machines and components for other manufacturers are experiencing an upswing that could be a sign of things to come for the broader economy. The industries fueling the demand vary. In some cases, business is coming from medical device makers, which are expected to see increasing growth as baby boomers age and need more medical care. An uptick in orders is coming from oil and gas producers supplying energy to growing economies in countries such as China and India. And then some are getting a pop in sales from aerospace manufacturers that are busy building fuel-efficient aircraft and engines and need special parts to get the job done. More

Surry Community College in Dobson, N.C., is seeking to upgrade its welding and machinist programs by proposing the construction of a new multiuse building. College President Dr. David Shockley recently briefed the college board of trustees about the project that directly will benefit the school's welding programs and allow space for the Automated Industrial Systems and/or computer assisted machinist programs. He also said that upgrades are planned for the old "S" building on campus. "If we're going to attract business, we need to show them we're serious by the quality of our facilities," Shockley said. Brainerd Dispatch    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
U.S. Military serviceman Adam Schnettler recently said he couldn't walk through Central Lakes College in uniform without someone reaching out to say "thanks" and asking how they could help. Enlisting in 2007 and spending 10 months of deployment in Iraq, Schnettler, who lives in St. Cloud, Minn., and is in the area participating in active training at Fort Ripley, currently is unemployed. But he hopes all of that will change following CLC's Celebrate Veterans Career Exploration Event — exactly what CLC, the community, Veterans Administration and military organizations were focused on achieving. Opinion: Could Africa be world's next manufacturing hub?
CNN    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
With domestic labor costs rising, many Asian manufacturing producers are now looking to relocate their factories in other regions of the world. Could Africa replace Asia and/or China as the world's next manufacturing hub? To be sure, Africa has a number of manufacturing advantages that it has yet to realize. Besides low labor costs and abundant resources, these include duty-free and quota-free access to U.S. and EU markets for light manufactures under the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act and the Cotonou Agreement. Is this enough to offset Sub-Saharan Africa's generally low labor productivity relative to that of its Asian competitors? More

MIT enables robot, human collaboration in manufacturing
Computerworld    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
MIT researchers have developed an algorithm that they say will enable robots to learn and adapt to humans so they can soon work side-by-side on factory floors. Traditionally, robots working in factories are large, imposing and sectioned off in metal cages as they move heavy loads and perform menial, repetitive tasks. However, Julie Shah, the Boeing Career Development assistant professor of aeronautics and astronautics at MIT, said robots can be more than they've been in a manufacturing setting, adding that it's time for robots to begin working more closely with humans, making workers jobs' safer and easier.
