Global steel output increased during May
IndustryWeek
Raw steel production rose 3.2 percent worldwide during May, rising to 136,302 million metric tons from 132,116 million metric tons reported for April. The monthly increase continued a month-to-month, down/up/down trend in steel output dating to December 2012. The World Steel Association, the Brussels-based trade group that represents steelmakers in 63 countries, supplied the results.

NASA unveils new welding equipment at Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans

NASA officials have unveiled a new, three-story, 165-ton cylindrical welding machine that will be used to assemble the massive core stage of a new heavy-lift rocket slated to be built at the Michoud Assembly Facility in eastern New Orleans. The equipment, called the vertical weld center, cost between $10 million and $15 million. It uses friction stir welding to piece together the core stage — more than 200 feet tall, with a diameter of 27.6 feet — for NASA's Space Launch System, a new mega-rocket designed to transport astronauts into deep space, an Obama administration goal.
Manufacturing in Ohio scores an A

When it comes to making things and moving them around the world, no one does it better than Ohio, according to a new report that gives the state an A for its manufacturing and logistics efforts. Still, the overall climate for Ohio's manufacturers could be even stronger if the state can get a better handle on unfunded liabilities such as pension costs and provide more clarity about taxes, says the report from Ball State University's Center for Business and Economic Research. Overall, the report touts Ohio as one of the country's manufacturing powerhouses.
Toyota investing $200 million in Southern manufacturing

Over the past two years, Toyota has invested more than $2 billion at its North American production facilities, and it apparently doesn't plan on stopping there. To keep up with recent strong sales, Toyota is investing an additional $200 million at its engine plants in the Southern U.S. to increase production capacity of its V6 engines.
NASA Langley Research Center joins manufacturing research group

NASA Langley Research Center has joined the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing, a consortium of manufacturing companies and universities conducting advanced manufacturing research in Prince George County, Va. The Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing, or CCAM, officially opened in March but has been doing research projects since mid-2012.

Training program to boost advanced manufacturing

The state is creating a program that will help meet the future workforce needs of the Massachusetts manufacturing industry, Gov. Deval Patrick announced. The governor said the program, the Advanced Manufacturing Regional Partnership Academy, is the first program of its kind in the United States and will provide hands-on learning opportunities, helping eliminate a chief industry concern of finding well-trained employees to fill jobs.
Tesla recalls Model S cars over problem weld

Electric sports car maker Tesla announced a recall for some of its Model S vehicles over possible weak welds on back seats. The recall applies to versions of the four-door sedan, which cost up to $87,000, produced between May 10, 2013 and June 8, 2013. Founder Elon Musk said on the company's blog that the strength of the weld on a mounting bracket in a back row seat "could be weaker than intended."

Welder builds mock motor for nuclear plant

Frank Sprague has been in the welding business for 12 years, bending iron into everything from handrails and gates to shepherd's hooks and cowbells. So when Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Plant in Vernon chose Sprague to create a replica of a 2,450-horsepower motor for their cooling tower, Sprague said "No problem." Sprague's mock-up cooling motor weighed in at 2.5 tons, and took him and his employee John Gerding two months to build.

A welding student's journey, from Port Angeles to New Orleans

For 20-year-old Kaleb McCartney, the journey from a college student in Port Angeles to his dream job as an underwater welder in the Gulf of Mexico has been a fast-tracked one, filled with fun and adventure. When he was hired on March 28, he Facebooked his many friends and followers: "New Orleans!! And I'm officially hired on at Bisso Marine!! Super stoked!!" Although he ultimately would like to work internationally doing deep-water salvage work, he's very happy right now to be starting out working offshore in the Gulf of Mexico. It's the fulfillment of a career goal he set for himself when he was a Running Start student at Peninsula College. Even then, he knew exactly what he wanted to do — welding.
Welding skills help student earn Eagle Scout rank

Fairbanks and Tolles Career & Technical Center student Nick Voit, used his welding and leadership skills to coordinate a project that would help enhance the grounds of the Milford Center community center. Voit and his group of volunteers made improvements and additions such as outdoor grills and picnic tables — including a table that would meet ADA requirements and is handicap accessible. This project, along with meeting other standard criteria, helped Voit achieve his goal of earning an Eagle Scout rank with the Boy Scouts of America.

From Iron Age to modern day, Cleveland's metalworkers labor in form and function

Hanging from the ceiling of a blacksmith shop on E. 43rd Street sits one of Cleveland's great artistic treasures: A hand-hammered, 80-foot-long metal frieze depicting the evolution of metalwork from the Iron Age to modern times. The sculpture, wrought by a master ironworker during the Great Depression, is just a small portion of the world-class collection at Rose Iron Works. Also adorning the shop are Art Deco lamps from the 20s and giant, ponderous locks that founder Martin Rose carried home from European castles until someone stopped him.
Art show salutes Henry Ford with fender sculptures

Melissa Machnee and her welding students at Schoolcraft College have elevated the fender from auto part to art in an installation honoring the 150th anniversary of Henry Ford's birth. "It was a wonderful group effort. Everyone had input on what they wanted and it all came together," said Machnee, a third generation welder and instructor at the college. "An installation creates an environment. It's a little different from a sculpture. We tried to create an experience. We have an assembly line with an arm that has fenders hanging from it. Another arm has the Ford emblem." The piece also includes figures of a worker and of Henry Ford.
