Manufacturers push training standards
Charlotte Business Journal
Share

Manufacturing is evolving into an increasingly sophisticated profession requiring workers who can calibrate machinery and are agile in math. Figuring out how to instill those skills in workers could be a key to lowering the unemployment rate and delivering highly productive workers to manufacturers. Congress took up the issue in 2010 when U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan, D-N.C., co-sponsored the America Works Act, which would have created a national standard for industrial training. Like many initiatives on Capitol Hill, the bill has not been considered. But industry groups and community colleges — the primary training ground for technically skilled workers — are moving ahead with programs that will demonstrate competencies and help people find jobs.

Chrysler's 'World Class Manufacturing' program a key to profitability
IndustryWeek
Share

A key to Chrysler Group's return to profitability is a plant performance improvement program developed by parent company Fiat SpA, Mauro Pino, the company's head of World Class Manufacturing, said recently at a conference in Plymouth, Mich. Chrysler first implemented Fiat's program, called World Class Manufacturing, three years ago as a continuous-improvement system focused on all plant processes, including safety, maintenance and quality. As an offshoot of the program, Chrysler opened a learning center in January called the World Class Manufacturing Academy in Warren, Mich. The academy has helped the company save more than $1 million since it opened, Pino said.

Welding scion caps career in role as AWS president
The Charleston Gazette
Share

As president of the American Welding Society, Bill Rice Jr. flies all over the world promoting the welding industry. Nobody knows it better. Welding is in his blood, his genes. It's part of his DNA. Ninety-five years ago his grandfather, a blacksmith, brought one of the first welding torches to West Virginia and started a tiny fabricating shop that turned into Virginia Welding Supply. Like his father before him, Rice learned to weld in grade school and ended up running the ever-expanding company. In 1992, he sold out to Airgas but stayed on for several years in various leadership roles. Now, at 65, he's CEO of industry wholesaler OKI Bering. As national society chief, he's working to alleviate a dire shortage of welders.

The Greenville News

When Bill Howell was put on what he terms "permanent furlough" by US Airways during the airline industry's economic upheaval in 2005, he moved from Pittsburgh to Upstate South Carolina and tied his fortunes to a manufacturing economy that has its own particular ups and downs. He landed a job with one of the best of the best in the region — Michelin North America. Recently, Howell took his son, 18-year-old Zachary Howell, to a manufacturing job fair hosted by Greenville Technical College in Greenville, S.C., in hopes of starting his youngest child on a good career path.

If you could get part of your training paid for in a field where salaries are high and workers are in demand, would you do it? It kind of sounds like a no-brainer doesn't it? There is a high demand for welders throughout the country and recently, 27 high school students received a head start on their certifications thanks to the Missouri River Area Career and Technical Center in Mandan, N.D. The work is loud, hot and dirty, but you only have to go to school for a year.

Young Iowa welders show off their girl power
Estherville Daily News
Share

It wasn't that far back when every young guy in 4-H wanted to learn how to weld. It was just guys then, though. Now, it's just about an even mix. Gary Myers, 4-H leader for the Center Champions, showed eight 4-Hers in his shop Saturday how to weld — four guys — and four girls. At one point, it was Claudia and Brandy Kinnander of the Iowa Lake 4-Hers of Armstrong and Scarlett Rose of the Ellsworth Go-Getters of Estherville who were anxiously awaiting their turns to put on their welding helmets and get to work. Myers said it gave 4-Hers the chance to develop a new skill — with safety coming first, and fun second.

Metal artist creates blooms neither pest nor disease can harm
The Chronicle Herald

Al Simm of Avon River Metalworks in Windsor, Nova Scotia, picks up a carefully manufactured metal sunflower leaf and holds it up to a tall, curved piece of steel bent to resemble a tall stem. His co-worker, J.P. Paradis, lights the acetylene torch and welds the leaf to its stem. They've already put the crowning glory on their sculpture: three metal sunflowers, curving downward to face onlookers. Simm returns to his workbench to select another leaf from a number he has made over the past few days and hammers it for texture. Before the morning is out, they'll have completed work on the sculpture, including welding on a pipe at the base, through which a stake can be hammered into the ground to secure the creation.

General Motors Co. sells its big, brawny trucks for their torque, testosterone and hefty profits, so when the U.S. automaker wanted to introduce the next models, they turned to one of the toughest executives in its ranks. Global manufacturing chief Diana Tremblay is one of the highest-ranking women in the automotive industry. Throughout her 35-year career at GM, she has made her mark in what were regarded as male domains, from directing foundry workers to staring down union labor negotiators. Now, she faces an even more crucial task for the world's largest automaker — ensuring the smooth 2013 introduction of the remodeled full-size pickup trucks and SUVs, GM's high-profile equivalent of a new Apple iPhone.

Artist from Salisbury, NC, creates whimiscal metal sculptures
Salisbury Post
Share

Lots of people know Peter Fowler. He's been a mechanic for 41 years, mostly at Rodgers Exxon on South Fulton Street in Salisbury, N.C. He's still there, although the place is now called Alligood Automotive. More than 20 years ago, Fowler got the idea to play around with some of the scrap metal that came his way, and there was plenty of it — things like old oil drums, motor mounts, rocker arms for cylinder heads and old wrenches. Fowler starts with a part that speaks to him in some way, and with a vision, a welding torch and some other pieces of metal, he ends up with a whimsical creation — a wild pig, a mouse, a daddy long-legs spider.
